Please help, account hacked

Thank you all so much again, and I appreciate the word of caution. My husband weighed it out and decided he was ok with the wait. He doesn't get to play the game that much due to RL. Sadly, the hack happened on one of the first nights he was able to play in a couple weeks. :'(

We're SO thankful to everyone here who was helpful and supportive. It was my same dumb husband that had the brilliant idea to do an emergency OTP removal through the support website. I didn't even think to suggest that b/c I figured we wouldn't be able to get into the account to apply the serial code given. They stole all the gil, but jokes on them - we're poor anyways LOL

So THAT'S why people are upset at secret questions. Why would you post that sort of info online if you know you are using it for security reasons? It would be like plastering your address and phone number online. lol

Depends who’s upset. It causes people to worry when companies implement jank security like what else are they doing @_@

Secret questions and answers are LESS secure than passwords and always have been. By their very nature you reuse said secrets at many products and services and unlike passwords they get stored encrypted (hopefully, at least) instead of hashed, so when a database gets compromised, the most likely things to be compromised isn’t your passwords, but you “secrets” that can be used to change your password, and sometimes even email accounts.

If you had your account compromised and you see that items/gil are missing. You should contact support again and have your account suspended so that you can be cleared of RMT activity. Then, after your account gets unsuspended you can put in for item restoration. From my experience its a small team doing this and the process to clear your account of RMT suspicion will be a few days, but restoring items or rolling back the account will take quite some time. For me it was several months to recover. Take better care to not click on links or login to fake forum pages etc.
