I don't understand how people make so much Gil in this game

I will say straight up I do not have any crafters/gatherers capped, leveled partially but not capped. My 1 retainer is only 57 so she brings back little of value.

Still, even considering crafting I do not understand how some people have 50-100million + gil, enough to afford a mansion, or even a medium. Spending a few weeks doing my roulettes + spending tomestones + wondrous tales has barely netted me 5 mil. At the rate I'm going I would need to spend nearly a year. How in everliving hell do people 50 several tens / hundreds of millions make their gil? This is insane. I don't believe crafting is really that profitable alone. Surely there's some shady secret here that nobody is openly disclosing since I cannot get a clear answer from anyone as to this question so I assume it is via shady means, since this game gives you no clear options to make heft sums of gil in a reasonable amount of time.

As it stands roulettes absolutely suck for gil and feels like everything combined is barely worth the effort, to the point where I've started to not even consistently do roulettes outside of leveling the one remaining job I haven't yet capped because I just do not care for the measly amount of gil I get it's that utter dogshit. I've reasoned that at the rate I'm accumulating (and I dont even spend my gil save for repairs) it's hardly worth the time and effort other than for exp (which also sucks) or just to do the content which is my primary reason at this point. Gil making just sucks so bad so I don't see how people make so much gil unless they're resorting to shady means.

Vouchers from shared fates are quite lucrative if you want to make money. My other method is crafting bardings from extremes, but you need to level desynthesis. e.g Hade's crystal goes for 1 mill.

I got all my Gill from Running Roulette, selling junk, doing some treasure hunts and selling some of the Crafting Materials, and doing Bunny Fates (Eureka).
My Crafters & Gathers are leveled (Well WERE before EW) but they contribute nothing to my Gill

I dont have 50-100mill (yet) But in time I will from this mixture of things

I'd love if this community would actually clearly explain things to someone unfamiliar rather than layer everything under 50 different secret metas that someone just playing the game normally would never know about. This community operates like a giant fucking clique. It's why I don't interact with anyone ingame outside of my FC. The most absolutely impenetrable community I have ever encountered.

I mused the possibility that people have been hoarding wealth for years but I have seen people go from new player to tens of millions in a short span of time so something is going on. There is information that I am not privy to which people are unwilling to explain.

Weirdly enough, crafting/gathering. On release of a new patch with new crafted gear, you need to get in early whilst the prices are still high, craft food/potions for people to buy for savage/ultimate raids, those shiny primal weapons? Craft those etc.

For combat classes, getting materia in the various ways and selling them on, especially the most sort after ones, you can do treasure maps to get materials to sell for crafters to make glamour pieces, or, if your crafters are high enough, craft the glamout item yourself and sell it on.

You can also try looking at some more niche markets. ARR relic weapons require a few crafted items, look up what they are and craft them.

You have to look at the bigger picture and not just assume everyone only wants the new shiny crafted gear set. The road to getting lots of gil is a long one, but, with enough dedication, it is possible.

Beyond that, people just have a solid understanding of patch cycles, how and when items are in demand in relation to said patch cycle, for example, on materia alone, you can make an absolute killing by buying it during patch 'downtimes' and reselling when new content patches are out. E.g., savage and ultimate raid patches will generally exhibit materia prices that are in excess of current pricing, similarly with consumables.

You also have Eureka, maps, and diadem, Bozja, and submarines, each which can and do reward a significant amount of Gil.

Made my money mostly in Heavensward it was gravy train then. Now personally I'm happy I don't have to sell seriously. When I'm tome capping my main and alts it's mostly materia and tome mats now given i get those as a side benefit of capping each week. There is a lot of money to be made with new raid tiers selling Materia.
