Question for kbd+mouse users

How many of you actually use a standard keyboard, as opposed to a keypad with a joystick for your thumb, like on the classic Logitech G13 and the Razer Tartarus?

I ask because I just can't image actually going into combat with just a mouse and regular keyboard: being able to maneuver in any direction just using your thumb makes a huge difference; being able to program all the keys is nice too but not as critical.

I use a standard keyboard and mouse exclusively on the PC version, as I was already used to keyboard+mouse control playing FFXI for over a decade (many of FFXIV's text commands and shortcuts are actually copied wholesale from FFXI) - it just feels more natural to use the keyboard given the amount of typing in the game (chatting, emotes, shortcut commands etc). It also makes selecting things on the hotbar more intuitive than having to messily scroll through controller menus quickly.

Everyone is different though and has different preferences, so don't take my preferences as the 'only' or 'best' way of doing things - find what works best for you!

I play on a full size keyboard. As a tank or DD I don't even touch my mouse. In 99% of content I don't need such fine control over the direction I run that I can't make do with forward, back, left, right, and keyboard camera turns. In nine years of playing, the only combat situation I've ever picked up my mouse for a fine camera turn was Shiva slides in E12S. Even then, I could usually maneuver myself "close enough" with just a keyboard camera turn.

As a healer my mouse is used exclusively for mouseover heals. I still turn and move with keyboard.

I come from FFXI, I only rarely use a mouse (and most certainly not in combat, that would be handicapping myself) and use a full size keyboard, because I'm used to controlling character movements, camera and menus via NumPad and cursor keys.
