I believe what he meant is that even with facts some people don't want to see it, and I agree with that. Emet Selch, in all his wisdom and power, prefers to act like a grumpy child when we present facts that we came from the future.

Except he has his gut reaction and then comes back a little while later saying that even if he doesn't believe us, the investigation is worth doing for the sake of their star. There is no logical reason to believe that the rest of the Convocation, even if skeptical at first as they most likely would be, would be opposed to looking into it more deeply just to be absolutely sure they weren't putting their world at risk by being stubborn. And there would have been plenty of information for them to review in Elpis, including witnessing Hermes' breakdown.
