Instead of a whip exactly, how about a kusarigama or dual "chainblades" a la Dauntless? As for playstyle for that weapontype, I'd like to see something that mixes melee with ranged, kinda like DNC with old Flourish, but as part of the core rotation instead of just for a single cooldown.

I dunno. I am certainly not against a Great Sword DPS, but for the same reason everyone else has stated, the game already struggles with role identity... not to mention the game was designed specifically to have class weapons represent that identity.

I guess what I am saying is there is no written rule against it, I certainly wouldn't be critical of the addition, and if they were creative with their design, it certainly could work...

But at the very same time, I strongly doubt SE would ever go that direction unless they were truly out of ideas...

Personally, I have been waiting and hoping for Gambler. Not only would the concept allow for them to go in any kind of direction, but they have past history with Setzer and other gamblers in their games. The gold saucer and Manderville's give the class a great foundation. Dice rolls, slots, and more.

I think it would be great fun and a awesome idea... But considering the very concept of the class and personally I would think it would be about 'chance', that would be directly opposite of recent 6.1 game design choices in removing variance and rng out of class game play, and maybe not pan out.

Certainly not a greatsword user either...

Though I suppose gambler could use a whip. Dice may be too simplistic and not ideal for weapon design, and a deck of cards shares the same problem, plus gets close in theme to astrologian, even if completely different type of cards.

For another greatsword user that is specifically dps, I think the idea (that others have touched on here) that would be the best, would be a berserker type of class, or something like Noctis does in FFXV, where the weapon type is actually 'multiple weapon' types. A greatsword just being one of them. A berserker could just sort of pull out desired weapon per move of the moment, almost like a weapon collector/Gilgamesh style warrior... Or more mystic/sci-fi like Noctis did with drawing them straight out of the air.

I fully admit to maybe enjoying a pure greatsword dps more... But I think it more likely SE introduce a greatsword dps through an idea like the above, rather then just plop in a 'SOLDIER' like pure greatsword dps class. There would need to be further differences from DRK then simply gothic/darker move set and doing dps rather then tanking.

of all the sword types to add, another greatsword does not seem likely.

even if they added a SOLDIER job, it would probably lean towards a bodyguard archetype (since thats basically how zack and cloud saw themselves in relation to aerith) and end up as another tank.

Well a Sword Tank Job is literally the embodiment of a Hero and Villain character.

Always being in the frontline to lead their allies or minions into battle to a point they are the very center of attention. Not to mention how stubborn they are with refusing to die no matter how many hits they take and no matter how hard that hits is.

With DRK already having a gigantic sword... I rather see the Job where we teleport to our swords like " Noctis " during that cross-over event we had a while ago.

Though since we got RPR and SGE with Endwalker a melee and a healer, the next Job would be... Ranged? Physical or Magic? I still don't like the thought of a Blitzball player as a ranged job I somehow can't see it seriously being a thing, but... who knows, Wakka was " ballzy ".

Sword teleporting is probably not enough meat for a full job honestly, with the sword aesthetic otherwise already being well represented, but it'd be nice additional flavor for Mystic Knight if we we ever get that in the game.

oh yeah no not just teleporting, it's mostly the reference to what Square has. Example GNB from FF8 but whatever the heck this is that Noctis is doing from FFXV

I actually haven't played the game, but by the looks of it he seems to teleport to his Sword or Swords or even weapons, and to wherever he throws his weapons and summons the weapons to even shield himself. Although I have no idea what the functionality is of a motor put on a sword but hey, it sounds cool xD

Based of what other games Square made or Final Fantasy related I can't really think of anything unique anymore when it comes to " Swords " that could fit as new FFXIV jobs.

Cloud's weapons are for example just gigantic swords, similar to DRK. Sephiroth's massive Katana would just be a Samurai with a longer katana. Lightning's weapon would be a Gunblade like GNB' taken from FF8. There's Keyblades? but I don't think that would fit FFXIV. Thought Noctis from FFXV with multiple levitating teleporting swords would be a concept for something. Just spit-balling.

Cloud had more of a gimmick in Advent Children, where he had like 6 swords he could combine into something resembling the Buster Sword

It is very much possible to make a full Noctis job already due to Noctis gameplay in his Armiger Unleashed Mode.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH2dC4EStU8

They just need to determine which attack will be a separate skill as a combo skill, cooldown skill, and off-cooldown skill along with getting a bit creative with maybe some new attack skills as well.

The concept for Noctis in Armiger Unleashed Mode is to be a literal Weapon Master job being able to summon all types of weapons for different combo melee attacks or sending them at enemies as projectiles for range attacks.
