I don't understand how people make so much Gil in this game

Shockingly enough, the answer is effort and doing things in the game. Did you expect it to be enjoyable or there to be some magic secret to making gil?

People have already given you the answers here, up to you to do anything about it.

Side note, if you have an aversion to the Party Finder for maps..how about ask the people in your FC? Otherwise, all you're doing is limiting yourself on a lucrative gil making method.

Most of my gil came from mining/botany, if you get the latest maps for legendary items and go to town when items are brand new, you can usually make a mint over a couple of weeks before prices plummet. Another good (if temporary) source is crafting items only purchasable with tomes. When the items are new, you can make a killing in the first day, especially if you have the foresight to have a full 2000 tomes ready to turn in as soon as the servers come back up. Finally, items needed for each week's Fashion Report typically surge in price so if you can figure out in advance from the clues what the item will be you can be ready for that too. (Just don't go too crazy, since they'll be back to nothing in a week.)

Carfter DO get you a lot of money.

Just an example: When EW dropped level increased from 80 to 90, one thing every crafter would use is the daily GC turnin. This ofc needed the base mats. There was also the problem of not beeing able to transfer between worlds because of endless queues.
-Check what crafters needed for 80/81 guild turnin and buy the base mats on your world almost emty
-Set an alarm for early early morning hours and move to the other worlds to get the cheap stuff. GZ, you now owned a town of the needed mats. This could be repeated, same for the crafter levequests
Now after some days you were stuck with some 90 crafters and were able to sell the crafted equipment to other crafters, which ofc everyone needed. In an hour you sometimes sold 30 pieces for 200k each, you basicly had to craft nonstop and every two minutes you had to adjust the prices of all items

Another more recent example: Last housing Update
-Farmed alot of mats for days just for basic things like small partitions, also switched world servers to buy the cheap listed walls or cheap base mats. The market started to have a lot of them items listed before the update, so the walls dropped to 6/7k. This is when you could buy them and fill up ur alt retainers or whatever
-When Housing was done the walls sold to up to 30k, mostly 15-20k. Its not much but if you have hundreds of walls in stock it adds up - and this was the case for a lot of items (lofts, lamps, stairs...)

Also keep in mind that every alt you got gets the same retainer slots, so if youve got 5 retainers and 8 characters you got 40 retainers to put stuff up for sale. For this kind of stuff you dont even need to worry about crafting, just buy/sell Put it into a retainer for a high price and check it once in a while

But in the end gil has no real worth because there is nothing to buy

For me, it's a combination of things. FC house with subs running is about 1m/day and suffices for pocket change. 8 characters × 3 retainers each = 24 ventures running at once and a very large number of MB posting slots, all linked by said FC. Cross-world arbitrage is potentially huge; I've had weeks where that alone nets me 20m+. Materia extraction is extremely lucrative if you time it right; I don't bother to meld past the x.0 gathering cap and spend the entire xpac hitting the earliest level-cap timed node mats with Better Crowned Pie, spiritbond potion, and spiritbond FC buff up, getting basically a full extract every 1-2 nodes depending on proc luck. That nets me a large amount of gathering materia; daily Experts nets me a considerable amount of combat materia. All of these I stockpile and sell off in job lots with new tier releases, to coincide with Savage and timed mats.

Made like 300Mil during ARR/HW when crafting had value, now I follow the principle of work smart not hard. Made 40mil with farming Bozja mounts during the end of ShB and delaying the sales till the market was empty ... stuff like that.

Crafting is dead now, everyone and their mom can craft everything HQ with full nq mats 100% of time and plenty of players run gathering and crafting bots ... competing with so many players is just not feasible especially when unfair advantages are used.

I will say straight up I do not have any crafters/gatherers capped, leveled partially but not capped. My 1 retainer is only 57 so she brings back little of value.

Still, even considering crafting I do not understand how some people have 50-100million + gil, enough to afford a mansion, or even a medium. Spending a few weeks doing my roulettes + spending tomestones + wondrous tales has barely netted me 5 mil. At the rate I'm going I would need to spend nearly a year. How in everliving hell do people 50 several tens / hundreds of millions make their gil? This is insane. I don't believe crafting is really that profitable alone. Surely there's some shady secret here that nobody is openly disclosing since I cannot get a clear answer from anyone as to this question so I assume it is via shady means, since this game gives you no clear options to make heft sums of gil in a reasonable amount of time.

As it stands roulettes absolutely suck for gil and feels like everything combined is barely worth the effort, to the point where I've started to not even consistently do roulettes outside of leveling the one remaining job I haven't yet capped because I just do not care for the measly amount of gil I get it's that utter dogshit. I've reasoned that at the rate I'm accumulating (and I dont even spend my gil save for repairs) it's hardly worth the time and effort other than for exp (which also sucks) or just to do the content which is my primary reason at this point. Gil making just sucks so bad so I don't see how people make so much gil unless they're resorting to shady means.

Raiding Savage, Doing All Daily Roulettes, doing the Weekly GC Adventurer Squads, not teleport everywhere. Level one Crafting and the best gathering for that crafting, (preferably Culinarian or Alchemy) and selling raiding food or potions on the market. If your server is active, you can net 5 mil + a week.

My personal strategy is finding leveling gear and items that the market board is out of and resupplying it for my own price.
