In my opinion, keep the current wards/housing zones the same as they are. Add a real "city-type" housing area somewhere. One where you wouldn't really have a front yard anyway. Make that instanced. You click the door (like the apartments in this game) and it pops up a window for you to go to your residence or someone else's. The interior can be the small/medium/large setup we have now. Make the cost a little less since you don't have a front yard.

I wouldnt mind instanced. There should be neighborhood housing Ward and instance housing and FC Ward with members to purchase small plots in there too.

At this point, housing should be more of freedom for people to choose without gating everyone from getting the plot size they want. Apartments don't really resolve the issue since there are folks who want outdoor furnishing.

No. Just, no. Stop continuing the trend of stupid housing wards. I already outlined a much better way to do this.

One ward with a division and sub-division in cities that support housing (and future areas). Instanced housing at the property line of the house, not the entrance.

NOT more wards. Discontinue the supporting trend of making it dumber than it already is.

Can't imagine they'll be at all looking at expanding housing until new data centers and servers are up and running. Until housing is completely over saturated in those, they can just say "if you want housing, take the transfer."

I hate that you're correct. I'm not at the point where I can justify transferring to a new data center, primarily because even if there are two bids for the medium I want, I'll probably lose it. And as a WoW veteran, I've seen the hell that newish servers go through after the game population has peaked and enters a contraction.

I'm especially salty right now, because I had a rl friend who played this game just announce he's dropping his sub because he can't get a house. He's not interested in raiding, he just enjoyed playing through the story and crafting. He long ago maxed out his apartment and fc room and wanted a house to decorate with. He's tried for months to get a house, and after striking out in Empy and seeing how few plots are available in round 2 of the lotto, simply said it wasn't worth it and there are other games to play. Personal housing is a marketed feature of the game that SE has failed horribly at implementing in a reasonable manner.

I'd quite like a housing area in Old Sharlayan, it's a very nice city but that's something we'll probably have to wait entire expansions for.

More wards? HELL YES.

More personal homes? HELL YES.

Upgrading homes? Unfortunately plot size is hard coded into the design of the ward, so it's not possible to upgrade a Small plot to a Large. I'd love to see new wards with only Medium and Large plots added in the future. That's likely the only way people will be able to have less restricted access to upgrade plots.

Make Fc houses instanced guild halls like guild wars & gw2- just call it 'guild house' or something
It still has a yard, decor etc but is where ever you want your FC house to be like a forest, snow area, desert canyon, tropical island

But my neighborhood is empty- I used to see 1 person who was always crafting outside of their house but they got lucky & relocated (I'm assuming ishgard)

Just gut the entire system. It's horrible & still is manipulated- remove the lottery- 1 private house instance per account(where you can choose the instance theme similar to my FC theme suggestion) where all of your alts have access to. FC house's are counted separate so you can still own a private house & an FC house but 1 per account.

Unpopular opinion: Everyone starts with a small house but you can unlock larger house sizes & more features by crafting or donating (or both) (but nothing anywhere near relic grind or beast tribe grind or doman enclave) Instead, more like animal crossing- when your house is being reconstructed, moogles appear & are working on your house which will be done the very next day. It just sounds fun & interactive to me.
