I like not having them. I mean, in other games I used one, and it was great for me to measure my progress as a player.
However.. The average person used it to berate and abuse others. It wasn't a good thing at all.
Sorry, if the community could be trusted to be helpful and use it for honorable purposes, then it'd be fine. But I'd put money on it they wont.
I have really hard time understanding why everyone thinks that damage meter would be a source of harassment. I don't think I can remember a single instance when I didn't make into a PF group in WoW because of DPS/HPS. The only criteria to join a WoW raid or dungeon is completion/iLVL which is already present in FF.
Um.. that's because group exclusion was done with ilvl...I have really hard time understanding why everyone thinks that damage meter would be a source of harassment. Once in, if you didn't measure up with dps things could get dicey. And I'm not talking about someone slacking off for the carry, actual people being incredibly rude for little to no reason because someone was below them. Had loads of M+ fall apart because of it.
I don't miss that game, or the people. Worst gaming experience there of my life, and I personally didn't get abused, but the vibe sucked.
A meter is not required to complete even the highest level of content. Yoshi will never add it as a result. You are going to have to come to grips with this and live with it. It will never change. An officially supported damage meter should be added, there is no good argument against this. All they need to do is allow people to simply set their damage to private if they can't handle potential criticism or just don't want to mess with it. Same way they did with the adventure plates.
They could even implement the feature with "private" as the default setting.
The information is already flowing that's how the current plug-ins work. All SE would need to do is add an in-game GUI that allows you to access it.
Being able to break down your damage and stats in a meaningful way is basically standard for most games like this, and it's insane that a game as big as XIV just ignores it. There are people I know who I keep trying to get into this game, but they won't because it is missing so many basic features like this.
Virtually nobody would quit because a damage meter was added (as much as they scream on twitter to the contrary, they won't). But more people would be interested in the game if it was updated this way. It's a net positive.
Oh yes, i can't wait to see even more people at 50% hp running everywhere like headless chickens in Potd and Hoh because "muuuuh dps", only to suddendly ending up dead on the next hidden landmine XDHow I would do it if it were up to me:
For most content, DPS meters would be strictly private; you could only see your own DPS. You cannot see other players DPS, and they cannot see yours.
"Full" DPS meters (Where you can see other players DPS) would be for elite content only, such as extreme trials, savage/ultimate raids, Baldesion Arsenal, Delubrum Reginae (Savage), Palace of the Dead (Floors 101+), and Heaven-on-High (Floors 31+).
If the content it not cleared because of enrage 2 times people would just leave savage PF groups in FF. How is that different? You don't need a DPS meter to know that your are not clearing enrage or someone is dying constantly or doesn't know the mechanics. You already know who to blame most of the times even without ACT help! How can you (not you personnaly) have so little faith in FFXIV community to think that people would suddenly become supertoxic and start requiring you to somehow provide your DPS as a proof?Once in, if you didn't measure up with dps things could get dicey. And I'm not talking about someone slacking off for the carry, actual people being incredibly rude for little to no reason because someone was below them. Had loads of M+ fall apart because of it.

Opt-out systems don't work well, FFLogs already does this and opting out of that is seen as a mark of shame. Overwatch tried opt-out when they hid player profiles to combat toxicity, but found they had to make it opt-in to show information instead, to prevent opting out from being a mark of shame for players and a new source of harassment.
I still hate that FFLog is opt out, it should be, LIKE ANY SYSTEM, be OPT IN, you should NOT need to take extra steps for your data(and yes, your character and youir performance IS personal data)
and people who try to justify it as "oh, but FFlog would be worthless if it was only opt in" worthless.... because? you can no longer see someone elses performance and judge them on it? without that person even knowing their data is up there? The "data" (aka the party etc) is still there, it would just be obfuscated with no name/character attached to it
or my favorit "i kick anyone who has their Logs hidden when they join my Farm group so making it opt in is stupid" so? what would change for you then if its opt in, if its opt in, everyone else is hidden, kick them then, maybe then you realize how stupid that argument is.
OPT IN SHOULD BE THE STANDARD FOR ANYTHING NOT OPT OUT
So you're just denying the entire history and culture of WoW where entire expansions were predicated on arbitrary "Gear Score" or DPS meters that were used to judge you at every opportunity?
You talk about how we should "formulate a thought of our own" but the only way you could believe what you're saying if is you're entirely ignorant of WoW's history which this game is heavily inspired by. Do you HONESTLY think that no matter how "private" or "optional" this hypothetical DPS meter would be, players WOULDN'T be asking to see it in high end rating if you applied to a high-end static or FC? If you do, then you're detached from reality and there's nothing to be gained by further conversation.
The problem with this is that players would be pressured to take screenshots of their DPS and share with people they're applying to FC/Static with. How I would do it if it were up to me:
For most content, DPS meters would be strictly private; you could only see your own DPS. You cannot see other players DPS, and they cannot see yours.

Stone Sea Sky is all you need to see if you're properly making the DPS threshold.
why do you want an official one? we both know that if hypothetically they did implement one it would probably be inferior or halfassed compared to current solutions
