Beyond the balancing nightmare that pets bring, there’s also lore to consider.

Remember in ARR and early HW the dragons are considered the enemy. Sure by 7.0 they’re our friends, but what about new players who aren’t that far yet? Wouldn’t make sense for adventurers to be running around with dragon friends. Same reason they probably won’t add a loporit race, because then when new players get to EW and everyone’s like “What is this strange bunny creature?!” While the player and all his friends are loporits it would raise some questions.

This has already happened, however. Minions, outfits, heck in Heavensward playing as an Au Ra was lore-breaking (I dunno if they eventually went back to change all the quests involved with Yugiri hiding her identity or not). Getting an ability later down the line wouldn't be an less jarring than any of this.

I recommend the Wind-Up Dragonet from the Moogle Tribe Quests. It would serve as the closest thing to a XI dragon pet in game right now, on the field. In dungeons, I personally like how Dragoon currently plays and would prefer it continuing to rely on its own power.

Could make it so dragon replaces your chocobo and can't use your chocobo for combat when it's out.

She wasn’t hiding her identity because of her race, she was hiding it to avoid garlean detection (and the obvious real world reason that they hadn’t revealed au ra yet). They have since retconned au ra into all sorts of places in eorzea, same with hrothgar and viera as if they were there all along.

As for mounts and minions, they gave up their lore relevance when they made an elephant fly.

There are admittedly lots of lore problems with jobs already, such as BLM and WHM being restricted arts that we were exclusively allowed to practice… but then everyone is doing it. But that’s more of an inconsistency. Dragoon having a dragon ally would fall into more spoiler territory.
