I hate the story in this game. Have since ARR. I play it for every other reason. Raids, RP, PvP, Housing, FATEs, Leveling, Collecting.

Story in ARR was pretty weak. All the rest were good IMO. Inguess I don’t see the same things others do when they say they “hate” the stories.
I don't really care, it's your time and money. But I'm always going to question why someone would invest into FFXIV when it's basically designed like a single-player FF game with MMO elements.
Playing an FF title, and skipping the story is like going to a steakhouse but only ordering water and a salad.

Funny, I did just that yesterday actually. And it's because people I love wanted to go to the steakhouse and I didn't want a meaty meal at that time. But I enjoyed the other content there - the drink and the salad.I don't really care, it's your time and money. Funnily enough, I can still solo FATEs, certain dungeons with Trust system, Golden Saucer, I do not have to socialize in PvP or raiding. It's like, a whole bunch of side dishes I really enjoy at the steakhouse that doesn't involve steak.
I wouldn't like the story either if I skipped the story too.I am sick and tired of people invalidating people’s positive experiences with the game just because they didn’t like the story. I’m sorry, but me personally, I DID NOT enjoy the story very much and I skip every single cutscene in the game….it just doesn’t matter to me that much.
I’m envious of people who DO enjoy the story, because Square Enix is known for their amazing FF stories, but XIV just isn’t one of them.
I won’t go into detail as to why I don’t like it, but we should stop witch hunting or insulting people who don’t like the story. Just because people didn’t like it doesn’t mean they don’t like other aspects of the game. For example, the boss music is phenomenal. Because I don’t like the story, I’m not a real fan then huh…..yeah no
When you deal with human beings, never count on logic or consistency.
Fluid like water. Smooth like silk. Pepperoni like pizza.

The problem is when your sole experience of the MSQ is essentially the completion of the Ul'dahn Envoy quest, or having experienced no further than Sastasha before electing to skip the entire thing, and continue to do so. Certainly, it is well within the right to do so, but whether you like it or not, criticizing the story beyond that point and under the set of circumstances is a very disingenuous take to have - Sure you can have the take, but it is very much a baseless take to have and one created from inexperience. But you can't deny that the story is a really sore spot in this community.
Someone saying that they didn't like the story or even started skipping cutscenes halfway because it didn't seem to go into the direction that would interest them or let alone buy a story skip is often met with a "Then why are you even playing this game? Everyone knows that the story is the selling point" or more aggressive versions like "This game is for story-lovers go back to WoW if you don't like reading and just want to skip to 'endgame' lol".
I haven't seen many people here that can deal in a mature way with someone not liking or even skipping the story that they personally loved.
I personally don't care. Like the story or not. Like a character or not. Doesn't affect me or my enjoyment. I do like talking about things as long as all participants don't treat their own opinion as the ultimate truth.
I'm surrounded by Zenos fans on a discord while I don't like the character one bit. They accept that I don't like him, I accept that they do like him. No reason to get worked up or even telling people how they should enjoy the game. If someone plays FFXIV just to take their Fat Cat minion on a walk, who am I to tell them that this isn't the point of the game?
Whether people or not skip the story, I personally don't care, but as above. It doesn't necessarily strike me as very surprising or unreasonable that people would bite back at that. I'm very certain you would spark the same or similar reactions if you were to criticize the combat system or the encounters from an incomplete view. Granted, I don't necessarily agree with the take in telling people how they should or shouldn't enjoy the game.
Ups and downs of the story aside (ARR is kinda dreadful and Endwalker dropped the ball so hard, I can't be convinced otherwise), it has always bothered me that people promote the game with the "story first" mentality, when there's still a fun game underneath. I think that is unhealthy for the game in the long run.
And yes, they do get really worked up.
More than half the time those people don't know what they're talking about either. Discussing lore in the FFXIV community is usually an exercise in frustration.
RESPECT DA BIBLE THAT IS FFXIV, REEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
