    DNC physics

    Hello !

So it may sound silly, because it's a fantasy game etc, but I am sometimes bothered by very pragmatic issues and I hope the lore community can help me give my mind some rest

DNC use throwing weapons, but how exactly would that work in combat ? Wether it's chakrams, knives, or shurikens or whatever, once it's thrown on your enemy, it won't come back by itself unless it's a boomerang... and it really does bother me !

Maybe there's like, an aether connection between the user and the weapon ? That makes it possible to "call it back", like Thor does with Mjolnir in the MCU ? lol

Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question, feel free to ignore it if you're not going to answer kindly and sincerely give it a thought !

    Thank you very much <3

The precision-guided throwing weapon which gleefully defies the laws of physics to return to the wielder is a touch omnipresent in media, and I've yet to encounter any in-game explanation for it, so I assume it's just one of those " don't think about it too hard" things.

Given how chakrams have been used in other Final Fantasy games, my angle on it is basically 'magic boomerangs'. You throw them and they come back.

Thank you for your input ; would you mind telling me in which other FF games where chakrams have been featured so I can extend my research to them ? Thank you very much

The chakrams are bound to the wielder by their aether, and most of the Dancer attacks, like almost all of the attacks in the game, are actually done by enlarged amounts of aether coursing over and around the weapon. Hence the animations.

Same way the melee ranged attacks work for PLD and DRG.

You won't get a lot of outright info, but you'll see them in animations plenty. They appear (often in the same category as boomerangs) in III, IV, V, VI, and VII (as Yuffie's shuriken).

Also in the Mana series, where the chakram in Secret of Mana notably return to the weilder (I'm remembering they're technically in the boomerang class but a few in the tier are distinctly chakrams)

One explanation could be that the throwing discs act as magnets, like Archer's twin swords from Fate/Stay Night which were bonded so that so long Archer held one sword, the other sword would always return to him after he threw it, but in this case the discs would be bonded to the user since Dancers often throw both at once.

FFXI had many a throwing weapon. Chakrams, boomerangs, rocks, satchels of various object etc. The ones that didn't have limited ammo also always came back to your character's hand regardless of feasability. Like mentioned already there won't be any lore regarding that aspect of throwing weapons but maybe you can glean something from the animations. One plus side to the majority of XI's design aesthetic is the realistic and grounded designs without too much craziness to ruin suspension of disbelief.

If you're willing to look outside FF, Xena uses her chakrams almost exactly like the dancer (and the look similar as well).
