Would be nice if they'd do something to help users that aren't in JP/California have a better experience without 3rd party tools/VPNs. While I personally avoid stuff like XIVA because I didn't want to worry about getting in trouble, it's been rough being in the midwest. When the servers were in Canada I actually had an incredible ping. But my gaming experience got drastically worst when they moved them all to CA. You have a much bigger advantage just because of where you live in the US and it sucks. I think I went from having 20-30ms ping to 120ms because of the server move.

There is no reason for you to get 120 ms from the Midwest to California. I get that to CA from Sweden ffs.

My ping from Ohio to California is 120ms and I don't live in a rural area. I'm on cable internet so it's not like I'm on anything like DSL. I don't know why it's that high, it's not something I can control. The thing about NA is our stuff is just set up in a terrible way. I don't even have the option to go to a better provider because in NA different ISPs have monopolies over different states.

None of is strictly illegal because it's not breaking law. ToS violations are not illegal and I will die on this hill. In game rules are not legal issues, no one is getting criminal marks for using parser.

Terms of Service means the set of rules the company sets in order to use their products, where they're within rights (right you grant them by agreeing to their ToS) to sanction your account or outright ban it as they deem fit.

Mods aren't illegal but they're not allowed either by the company and, if they decide to ban you over them, you'll have little say about it.

Not entirely true, the modification of either soft or hardware is highly illegal in japan. You can get serious jailtime for that. That said in most western countries it is not illegal.

The thing about it is they can't exactly enforce japanese law outside, well, Japan. So the most they can do is set Terms of Service and use it as a reference for legal battles in any country's court.
At least, that's my understanding about it, since I'm not a lawyer.

This is actually the example I usually use of the difference between "unfair" versus "cheating".

Is it cheating that I have a better connection than someone in Brazil or Paraguay, by virtue of living geographically far closer to the servers than they do? No, it's not cheating; it's the reality of how internet topography works. But is it fair that I get that better performance and can potentially double-weave as a result where the other player cannot? No, it's absolutely not fair.

It's why I have such mixed feelings on things like xivalexander and whatnot; they can demonstrably be used to cheat, which gives me an immediate knee-jerk reaction vehemently against them. But on the other hand, if it can be used to let someone in Paraguay play with the same performance I get out-of-box, thus leveling the playing field? I find that use-case harder to condemn.

(Honestly, I wish XIV would just do some compensation for latency natively. It's possible, as I've done it in multiplayer network code before -- and XIVAlexander and its ilk show it's hypothetically possible for XIV as well. But I grant it's a headache to do right, such that it compensates to put everyone on as much a level playing field as possible without also being able to be repurposed for cheating. I certainly won't claim my own implementations in the past were guaranteed to be 100% unexploitable; players are very creative at times.)

You do realize that the marker system is a DOWNGRADE?

You can't put markers down in alliance raids mid-pull to herd groups into specific places now.

You can't use markers to indicate where Nael divebombs are going.

MFW "grateful" when they literally just neutered markers for everyone while people using the addon still suffer no consequences.

I hope some of you here realize that when they start banning these popular tools and implement their own versions, it'll be a downgrade that makes everyone worse than where we started.
