I agree. EW did a lot for Zenos's character.
Besides that, I think a lot of people just hated him because he was part of a bunch of unwinnable fights in SB. The whole "strong character wants to fight strong opponents" is also a bit of an overused troupe, although I don't think it's that bad here.
Y'shtola and G'raha at this point both feel like fanservice characters. The death baiting doesn't feel too bad for Y'shtola personally because it's not just her death that's been baited at this point.
Most of them have overstayed their welcome in various ways, but I think the most egregious ones were those who wore masks at first, but then took those masks off when they joined us. Estinien and Graha are the two biggest offenders in my mind, since the people they were initially were far more interesting to me than the goofy borderline comic-relief characters they are now. Gaius is an exception; I really like where they went with him because he wasn't around enough to be turned into a joke.
I know this is going to be a hot take and a half...
But were they ever not??
G'raha I can give a hard pass on that because as the CT boy and the Exarch he had a bit more to him than just being a cool character for the sake of it. But he definitely devolved into that the moment Endwalker began.
Y'shtola hasn't done anything worth a darn other than kill herself every time something's needed of her. "Fountain of knowledge" my front bottom; all the knowledge she can provide is stuff we either can come up with or other people can provide as well. "She can see through aether", yes, great, and what else? To tell us that the thing in the Tower of Zot was a dismembered man? Great, we ended up knowing about it later on regardless.
I don't dislike Hildibrand as much as I dislike Godbert. I get that they're using him (or trying to) as a 'ripped chad' trope character but personally? I am sick of the repetetive, unfunny, sight of that idiot running around in his damn underpants. Oh - and the abusive parent angle is absolutely NOT funny either. For me it’s Hildibrand and Minfilia. I never enjoyed the Hildibrand series, his shenanigans are annoying, he’s not funny and I couldn’t be happier to skip his cutscenes with the new relic quest line. As for Minfilia I am glad they finally got her, 4 expansions (Arr-Shb) worth and she was still useless and a waste of a character.
Right? ngl, the writers using Y'shtola as a barely disguised exposition tool is...rather annoying. Like, ok, she's smart, I can get behind her being deductive, but it's one thing to be right about a theory you're puzzling together, and another to practically break the 4th wall explaining - in great detail - what's going on, and then slap "but that's just what I think" at the end. No girl, you didn't assume or guess anything, you knew!
(for what it's worth, this is also why I don't like Batman)

Also can someone tell me how she reads? I don't understand how she's supposed to be blind but can still see aether and that somehow enables her to read?
Fandaniel.
His dialogue, his kooky mannerisms, his motivations... none of it works for me.
Which one? The Sad guy or the Clown?
That I can sort of explain because the Alchemist quests mention that our books and pages are infused with aether, and that the ink carries a given aetheric signature.
BUT
I don't think this applies to just about any ink. Has to be Enchanted Ink.
And I don't think this applies to just about anyone either. There's a massive difference between whether Y'shtola writes something versus whether the muggle barkeep at the Brume would.
Also, I think it depends on the content. If I drew dickbutt but were a muggle, would you still notice it was me the same way you would Y'shtola writing the instructions for Flow?
Now, I understand that she's sensitive to aether, but I doubt it'd be that constrasting between every other source of aether.
