Let's post our ideas on Player housing and furnishings!

Since in 2.0, we're getting player housing, let's have post our thoughts on how we want our houses to be in this thread, for the dev team to promptly steal ideas from! (or totally ignore. )

My personal thoughts on housing itself:

Make it so that it's an actual house with an outdoor area, and we can customize it so we can add rooms how we want using the wall type we want, and so on. It could be similar to how you would see a floor plan: you'd add outside walls in the shape you want, from a simple box, to a + shaped building, to an octagonal structure, or what have you. Perhaps even have curved wall options, to allow for more options. Then, you could add inside walls and doors to partition the inside of the home however you want, dividing it into rooms.

After that, you could add decorations to said rooms. But let's not just make a house! why not have outdoor gardens, ponds and waterscaping (stocked with fish we choose!), trees, patios and outdoor furnishings, and the like. Perhaps even a personal cave you could choose to decorate and/or build up as a personal mining area for a large cost. The cost for creating player made mining/lumber/fishing points would preferably be highly expensive and difficult, making it more of a long term investment then a quick way to create your own safe mining haven.

Another feature i'd like to see would be ways to let others come to your house! Even better yet, you could have two teirs of passes: a key to the home you could give(or revoke if said friend turns out to be not so friendly) that lets them enter and use your facilities whenever they want, and a bazaarable passport that lets a person in for a certain alloted amount of time. Said passport would list important information, such as what facilities/grade # nodes and such on it, opening options for players to make a living by pimping their house out and selling the facilities for others to use for a fee. A picture of the house might also be useful information for a passport, so that a linkshell wanting to rent out a beautiful home for a large linkshell meeting could buy passports to someone's mansion.

As for some furnishings id like to see, how about a aether radio? With it, turning the radio on would enable you to see, and perhaps use, shouts in all three cities, letting you relax in a low lag area and craft while still being able to keep an eye out for possible primal groups to join. Said radio would also encourage city diversification, as people would no longer feel pressured to stay in one area in one city or miss out on the action.

Some other possibilities might be beds, starting out with a terrible bed that gives you less resting bonus than the inn, and costly upgrades that eventually give you a bigger bonus than an inn. Also facilities for your crafts that give you only the most basic support at first, but can be upgraded for large fees that eventually can surpass what you can get even from a guild.

The idea is that most of the best upgrades aren't something that an individual player could easily get, but something that a linkshell would be able to manage. So that way a linkshell could choose to help a member out with the best crafting facilities, in exchange for them letting the linkshell access said facilities to help other members out.

Obviously such things would have to be balanced out somehow, but I'm sure others can give their input on how best to do so. :P

Honestly, I think I could sum up what I'd like to see in a housing system (in any MMO, not just XIV) as something similar to Everquest 2's. Their housing system was/is awesome. Full furnishings that could be crafted, bought from NPCs, awards from quests. You could have wall-hangings, ability to change look of walls and floors, various pets you can keep in there and interact with (pet, play with, feed, etc), different light fixtures, decorations (some pretty freaky ones). And you could place and rotate things any which way you wanted. It wasn't set up on a grid like FFXI's where everything had to be turned in 90 degree intervals. There were also different sized houses with multiple floors. You could have NPCs in there to perform various tasks.

You could also set up visitation rights to everyone, only people you specify, only guild-mates, etc.

One thing I'd like to see carried over from XI is the "moghancement" concept. I always loved that, personally.

I agree with Preypacer. I played EQ2 as well, and I had fun decorating my house, and also my guild hall. For this to be possible, the user interface has to be very robust, very responsive, and not clunky like now. Right now it's hard to even target a monster. This is my first wish when they implement house-decorating, that we can buy and sell items quickly, every clickable action instantly responsive. I doubt FFXIV will have as complex of housing system as EQ2; we all could hope for it. I'm thinking it might be more of FFXI style moghouses where you can put a bed, or hang a wallpaper, but not like EQ2 where you can make bowling alleys or kitchen counters using coffins, and aquarium using watery mirror between coffins to create illusion of glass, etc.

Gods, i hope its better than just mog house 2.0. We need to think outside the literal box. I'm hoping we get different options as far as walls and such too. Like there could be brick, wood, marble, stone, that sort of thing. And i agree, multiple floors, balconies and wings, that sort of thing, would be nice as well.

And aquariums are a must, though im sure SE will think of that already, with so many in FFXI.

It would be kind of interesting to have pets in your home as well you could take care of.

Well now, i'm surprised we didn't get more responses, considering the clamor for player housing before they announced it. :x

Personally, i'm hoping that player housing becomes an upgradable hub where a lot of things, such as guild support, exp bonus from resting, gathering, and more can be gained for a fairly cheap price, but is generally inferior to the existing systems. But if you are willing to put in the costly upgrades, you should be able to get something a bit better than elsewhere.

I'm also hoping if for us to get chocobo stables and furnishings for their care to put in our houses, to raise our own chocobos. (assuming they put a chocobo breeding system in like with FFXI.) Bonus points if your chocobo actually hangs out around the house too and you can interact with it. It would potentially open the door for other pets as well... and if they ever introduce beastmaster class, perhaps offer you a way to raise and breed your own monsters that are superior (or perhaps inferior if you're terrible at gene selection :P ) to their wild counterparts.
