I kinda want to change my character's name, but can't come up with any ideas...

I'll be honest, I've always hated games that made you choose a first AND last name for your character. I love FFXIV to death, but coming up with two names is incredibly tricky.

I used to want to go with "Lore-friendly" names, but seeing as a Xaela Warrior of Light is a pretty hard sell as a "canon" character in lore, I figure I should just have something that people can identify me by.

But... I'm honestly struggling to come up with anything.

I used to always use "Terin" in RPG's (in fact, it's a name I first accidentally typed in on Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest). Lately, though, I've been streaming and recording videos under the name "Jcorb", which isn't really a "name", certainly not enough for an immersive game like FFXIV.

I dunno. Any luck coming up with names? Tips or advice?

I've typically used names for my characters across MMOs that are references to things I enjoy (or even past character names from my early MMO days) or things that have a meaning only I really understand. I like to make them personal and very...me, I guess. Idk, you could try that.

Well if nothing else, here are two name generators specifically for FFXIV you can try. They offer more diverse output than the in game name gen, but are still lore friendly.

But... even if it's a struggle to think up a last name initial, you might find in the long run it helps. Names can be much longer these days, usually, and often spaces are allowed - and when not, short names are often taken. Having a last name to throw in, even if it were something like "TerinSmith", can help with all those issues should you try other online games here and there.

Personally, sometimes I just pick a name (as in just the last name, perhaps) from a recent book I've read - especially secondary characters. Some of them sound plausible without being too exotic which I like. Especially the Hyur namegens above could also potentially help with that. Similarly, I've done what Vahlnir does sometimes... make the name a very obscure reference to something I enjoy, possibly permutated beyond any reasonable recognition.

This one generates a name using readable words based on... well, whatever you tell it you like, and it also has a built in thesaurus so it'll automatically pull in similar words to its pool as well.

And, that's about as much help as I can offer. It's a bit of a personal thing - I think you'd agree, from the tone of your post? And we just don't know you, let alone for the years it might take to know you well enough to make a good direct suggestion. I hope this is enough to help guide you to your ideal name, though. If you want to stay true to lore, male Xaela names are Mongolian forename with Tribe as last name.

Tarkhan, Taban both seem close to Terin. Tarkhan seems like pretty nice name actually, with the meaning "He who is skillful". Likely shorted by friends to Tar or Tark, neither of which are bad.

This is the same advice I would give. Xaela is an easy race to pick lore-appropriate names for since it uses a real language for names and has the descriptive list of tribes for you to pick from – whether you want your character to be part of that culture, rebelling from it or only connected by ancestors.

Additionally you have the option to vary spelling as you like. The naming conventions linked above note that Xaela names can vary in spelling, with the example that "Jagadai, Chaghadai, and Tsagaday" are all variants of the same base name, so there's a fair bit of flexibility for you to reshape a name if you want.

I'm very wary about that first name generator – I can't comment on the value of Xaela names there, but at a quick look, Seeker names seem quite off. The naming conventions note that male names are short, one- or two-syllable names, with the implication that female names tend to be longer, but the name generator seems to be producing similar types of names for both (and they seem to have been invented by the person who made the generator).

Plus it's just weird design to build a generator for "Miqo'te names" and have it spit out half and half for each clan, when you could just build separate Seeker and Keeper lists.

Meanwhile, I'd have to check the list, but I think the second link is just reproducing the in-game name generator. Also it has really wonky formatting, at least for me on mobile, and isn't inserting spaces or line breaks between the names.

I mostly generated my character name with the in-game random option.

You could always make a second character to test what names are available on your server, and when you find something you like use the character to hold it as you get the process to change names ready.

I picked the name based on what my character is. 'Ardens' means glowing/shining in Latin, 'Lux' means light. In your case, I'd suggest you pick a word that would best describe your character, traits, etc... Translate them to Mongolian, see what combination you could come up with.

I had a non-lore compliant name initially, but twisted my original forename into something that sounded like the original but carried a relevant meaning in Mongolian, then just picked a tribal surname based on which one I thought had interesting potential for a backstory.

I often make names that covers certain themes. Like my name is based of my charr bleed warrior in GW2, charr having roman names with the surname also being a jab at the games current meta at the time which was anything but bleed.
