Are the rules really this extreme where people are afraid to make the social game... well... social? and if so, what in particular is causing this?
I'm usually ↕chewing the fat↕ with 30-40 people in linkshells or limsa.

You're either not in the right area or on a dead server.

Also, unlike wow we have said linkshells where people spend most of their time chatting. We don't need to blatantly ignore trade chat because of the off-topic racist, sexist, homophobic spam in Ogrimmar that the GMs refuse to address. I unsubbed from WoW when I reported someone for suggesting that America should just "kill all the gays and get it over with" in trade chat and a GM told me that they saw nothing wrong with that and gave me a week's vacation for "abusing the report system."

    Sincerely,

Someone who at one point was subbed to both games.

As someone that loved world PVP in WoW, I got some colorful stuff said to me on the regular lol.

I i did manage to get a few death threats too, but I forgot to add them to the "Wall of love" as I call it lol. I didn't report anyone, it was easy to shrug off people being jerks.

Be polite and don't use street language including "debatable" words like "dog".
SE does not take those things lightly even if your intention different.
Your first sentence is common sense. Of course you don't do that stuff in a public channel. Why would you even want to? Unless it Eorzean politicians or races
The street talk one seems absurd, I've never heard of any suspension for that.

Again, the key is not to escalate it. Its sadly common for people to do something they know is wrong, get called out on it, and act the victim. Those are the people that get their well deserved suspensions

We live in an era of censorship. People know this deep down and just avoid chatting altogether.

I just logged out of an alt where everyone in Limsa was shouting "piss chat" on /yell.

I get the feeling by censorship you mean "I can't shout slurs anymore".

Sorry, but this is BS. You have the right to say your opinion. But nobody is obliged to give you a plattform to spread your opinion into the world.

    Cheers

How can i enjoy any existing social aspects of the game if angry players or someone with a bone to pick can misinterpret dialogue for the sake of punishing folks? I left a game where folks would bait others into voicing a "wrong opinion" and have guilds report them in unison specifically for power trips. I don't want to deal with that crap a second time around.

THAT is going to be a problem in ANY game you play with other people. any. game.

    period.

you ALWAYS have the unknowing ability to offend SOMEONE somewhere, because... they arent you.

it really and completely is all about, if you arent a jerk typically nothing will happen. many people chat every day in say and yell and do not get banned. you are making a mountain out of a molehill I think.

but if you are not confident in your ability to be social without offending someone, then you may have a point. but, as I said, many people, myself included, manage to chat socially in game, not in tells or fc chats, and still not be banned.

Well, i'm certainly no jerk, and I don't pick fights. I've kinda come to keep cool ass well, maintaining my personal code where I don't report someone unless it's spam, in game advertising, or real world threats. I guess I might not get in trouble with my demeanor, but the concern is there.

as you stated previously... so I am unsure as to why you are so worked up over it. COULD it happen? sure could, people are people. and many of those people are jerks... but its the same as someone harassing you everywhere else even in real life. you can either sit petrified in your house that something MIGHT happen, or you can actually live life.
