Rules arent harsh, but they are incredibly vague in some instances.

Most chat via private tells and discord. I would avoid open chat unless you have something to ask

It's all about how much self restraint you have.
If you're generally a pretty polite person you won't have issues.
If you have no filter and are in the habit of spewing a number of things Blizzard will turn a blind eye to... well, yes, you'd get in trouble. For some individuals, it may be safest to just not chat. Here's a pretty safe rule: Is what you're saying namecalling or attacking someone as an individual? If no, you're probably good. If yes, it's probably reportable. The big caveat is those used to the standards of certain other communities may not see anything wrong with what they're saying because they're so acclimated to those other environments.

Mhhh, maybe it is a problem with NA-servers? In the EU there is much conversation in the /s chat, especially in clubs.
Cheers
Most clubs I've been to are /beesknees fiestas with no talking :P Only a rare club or two actually have /s open. But I have to say I've been the degenerate who swears in /s and usually people don't bat an eye at all, much less report it

In the EU it is mostly the opposite: /s is open but /yell and /shout are not.
Cheers
It could also depend on the context of the swear itself. Using it directed at someone in an insulting manner when they say something about what someone else said, that could get someone to decide to report. Using it as a "I messed that up" is less likely to get reported. But that also depends on each person's mindset when it comes to profanity.
I personally couldn't care less if people use profanity, so I don't even bat an eye at it.

Yeah, I don't care if people use it either. Within reason, of course. But profanity is profanity so I don't use it outside of my friend circle in game. All it takes is one person having a bad day to ruin mine.It could also depend on the context of the swear itself. if you drop profanity in public chat and someone reports it, you'll likely get a GM on you. even if its made in jest, among friends.
the FFXIV community is generally incredibly selfish, petty, snakey and vindictive.
put two and two together.
