Exactly how harsh are the chat rules?

Here's the scenario I've got going on. I'm another one of those wow refugees that came here sometime last year after Blizzard showed their true colors. I like to roleplay on my fantasy characters. Nothing extreme, no ERP, but light stuff, like character development. When I came over, I found myself amazed with all the people and the gameplay itself. But, chat was eerily silent for all the people around me. I haven't payed it much attention, but earlier today I saw people talking in /say, and I half jokingly made a remark. Well, this is what went down.




Are the rules really this extreme where people are afraid to make the social game... well... social? and if so, what in particular is causing this?

a profanity filter is not a license to swear. as a dev in some other game said, "just because I wear a bulletproof vest is not a license to shoot me" same applies here.

to the OP, yeah, some people are easily scared to chat. which is an extreme take. a profanity laden stream for 20 minutes is likely going to get you reported, with consequences. having a normal conversation is unlikely to.

it is common sense really.

The rules aren't as extreme as some make them out to be. I don't chat a lot in game, if at all most days. But it's pretty simple. Don't be a jerk and don't use any language that could be considered rude or explicit by today's societal standards. Do that and you'll be just fine. There's not much of a reason to fear using the in game chat channels.

It's easy to get banned if you're toxic. If its plausibly toxic you will also get banned. if you say a cuss word in a non aggressive context you'll be fine. The fact they just modified TOS to include passive aggressively using the good job! and good match! buttons in PVP should give you an indicator that they're after toxicity, not necessarily cussing.

People who are afraid of being banned for talking are most likely the ones that would get banned under even the most reasonable of circumstances. I don't see why people would be afraid of getting banned for simply talking unless they already have a toxic side.

There is and never will be anything harsh about keeping chat clean if folks can't communicate without constant swearing or in general being a jerk social games aren't meant for them.

Lost Ark players talk more about FF14 in ocean zone chat than I've ever seen FF14 players talk about FF14 in shout chat. This isn't because of the chat rules though. This is mostly because shout chat is clunky to use and there's pretty much only Limsa shout chat to talk in.

Rules are essentially don't be an asshat.
If you arent antagonistic then you have nothing to worry about
If you try to give advice and someone takes it the wrong way, just shrug it off. then you have nothing to worry about

Ive never heard of anyone I know getting a suspension. You see it every once in a while on the forums, but often without being provided the full story.

Kinda funny to see this post. About a week and a half ago i reported a person at my server that multiple times acted racist and homophobic at the /say chat. Took 2 days for the GM to give me a reply, "We gonna investigate the matter". I was not the only one to report neither the first, the person constantly talks proudly that people reported them before and nothing happened
Well, today the person is still at the same place, doing the exactly the same thing

Not saying that all the cases are like that, but i don't think that chat rules are that extreme
