When moving all data from one server client to another.. it takes quite a bit of time to do, far worse the Server merging ( which took a day with all the Extended Maintenance and all and that was only Merging worlds.. this is a whole different ball game.. All the data from Characters, world itself, Maps, Quests/missions/Primals/Dungeons/ 2.0 content... this is no day job.. 3 days at least.. but with all the expected problems I feel will occur.. it will probably take a week.
Again, these are not sources or accurate answers.. but this is whats to expect though something along these lines. SE can take all the time they need.. as long as its for the good of FFXIV, I don't mind at all.

I paid to get legacy even though i dont play haha
Wouldn't it be interesting...if you actually died...but your spirit is reborn in this new world...2.0 and you possess some items and knowledge...and skills from your past.
Those that played prior to 2.0 would carry over some levels and all their items but the game would start from square 1...hypothetically.
I know they said that we wouldn't lose our progression...but what if we didn't per say and got an elite class character type unique for 2.0 starting...
You guys think what you want, I know who I am and what I do, and that all that matters to me. so bleep bleep to you :P.
But yeah, of course I don't know how long SE is going to take because the time isn't here yet, All I can offer in terms of experience is how long it takes to move data of different types ( possibly) from 1 server to the next. For all we know they could have it up in 1-2 days.. but when I think rationally and logically about what they have to be transferring, ( Characters data "making sure not a single Character gets lost, which will take the most time since its the most crucial thing they need to do out of all this.") If they lose even a handful of character data it could mean trouble for them (maybe).
Then they have the Transfer ALL data from the games 1.0 (whatever they are bringing along to 2.0 anyways) and 2.0 content itself, along with its Maps, Missions, etc. Its just not logical to even think they can do it in a days time. I mean if they do it faster then what I'm imagining then great props to them. I'm only giving the logical side of things.. if they do it better then my logic.. That's fine.. that just means we get to play 2.0 faster!
.
Anyways, that is my input I'm not pulling no magic bunny out of my hat that's holding up a card saying " FFXIV will be down for 3+ days" Just stating what I feel to be the most rational. ( I hope SE proves me wrong though).

First let me say that it is awesome to see the anticipation for 2.0! I hope it is a sign of things to come and that FFXIV takes off for many years of success when it finally does drop. Now, about that timeline:Am I the only one who noticed this ?
Posted on the Lodestone, May 21 :
"In order to fulfill the requirements for the Legacy Campaign, a player must register his/her copy of the game no later than Thursday, May 31, 2012"
On the Legacy Campaing page :
"Users with service accounts that have paid for at least 90 cumulative days of subscriptions between January 6, 2012 and the start of version 2.0 beta testing are eligible."
Does that mean 2.0 Beta is about to start?
In your original post you quote Square Enix as saying:
Then you re-write this quote in your second post:a player must register his/her copy of the game no later than Thursday, May 31, 2012"
Registering and paying are two totally separate things. As soon as you install the game and start playing the free trial you are required to register. Even if you quite playing after your one month trial is up, and NEVER pay a dime to play again, you still "registered" your game when you launched it.must HAVE PAID for 3 months BEFORE May 31
Secondly, the 2.0 Beta is Free to Play, so they would not make you buy a 90 day subscription on May 31st then start the FREE beta a few days later. Therefore if you get 30 days free trial plus 90 day subscription for Legacy = 120 days total putting us roughly September 27th as the EARLIEST date they would pull down the old game and start launching the new game.
But, as we all know they are usually 1-2 weeks behind schedule on their patches (plus they probably set that date a little early on purpose to ensure ppl have time to get it in) so I would guess we are looking more at first or second week of October as the launch of 2.0.
Hopefully we will get some answers in two weeks at E3!

Just take a look at the 2.0 roadmap... it looks like the porting process actually takes place from May through October.
Edit: Nevermind, looks like this is just quests, main scenario, etc. Character port will probably be once they actually take the servers down for 2.0
