They lost their players more due to terrible borrowed power systems, garbage story and lore retcons, content droughts, and a focus on the 1% end game players at the expense of everything else. Not because of a single ability removal.
>Nooo! It's just one ability!!!!
This is just another bad decision by SE in a long line of stupid decisions. Ask any DRK player, any healer, anyone who liked how Gunbreaker originally sounded. Dragoon is going to be getting this treatment next, so it's not just one ability.
third shell for GNB was a mistake.>Nooo! It's just one ability!!!!

Look I found the guy with the funny hat!
At the root of all this was a sense of hubris, the idea that WoW was the best MMO out there. This had built up over most of the past decade, mind you. Tons of other MMOs came along and were heralded as "the WoW killer" but few of them are even still running today, and most went F2P and lost the majority of their initial population. FFXIV is in danger of falling into the same trap, because for the past couple years it's been capitalizing on WoW's string of failures and has arguably usurped it as the MMO with the highest active player count. I don't know who has been pushing internally for FFXIV to make its job design increasingly over-simplified, but I think it's fair to say this move is likely motivated by a desire to keep expanding FFXIV's already sizable market share.
This is a trap, because increasingly changing what made FFXIV so great in the first place will result in the alienation of the original devoted fan base that got them this far. FFXIV should keep doing its own thing and letting that speak for itself, instead of screwing with the formula to chase "broader appeal" that might never actually materialize.
