Thinking about it, we could have a bit of complexity in the running system.
Like, 3 "stacks" of running, each recovering after a shorter amount of time than now. When you double tap "w" or just by pressing a button, you consume a "stack". So for a shorter time (compared to now) you can run. If you use it again, the time is reset and you have the consumption of another run stack and so on until it runs out completely. Or, the time is added to the run.
Could be like: 1 run stack = 10 secs of sprint. If you press it 3 times, 30 seconds running in maximum. The cooldown could be like 15 secs for each stack...
That way, you can have a little deeper control over your runs and cooldowns.
