Regarding registration: I understand why people want to use the maps without registering but I almost never send out mails to users. It only happens when something really big changes - we are getting close to 1000 members and that will result in a mail. I use twitter to inform interested people instead (@KidaTheDisciple).
We are really putting a lot of work in to these maps (and the site in general) and when people register they let us (the moderators and I) know that we are doing a good job. So I think it's a small price for the information you get. It costs you nothing and it may help me in the future if I need some sponsors. The site is free and I of course plan to keep it that way but it costs me time and money to run it.
