Server time

Not sure if this is a bug or not so avoiding making a bug report until I've asked you guys about it.


I play on the oceanic data centre and the local time zone is most likely based in Sydney (or thereabouts). That time zone is UTC+10.


Today, I tried looking at the server time in game and it said it was 10 hours earlier than the actual time, so UTC+0, appropriate for somewhere in Europe, NOT anywhere in or even near Australia. It's literally almost on the opposite side of the planet.



I was wondering, would there be some reason for this? Are all servers synced to UTC+0? Should I report it as a bug? I dunno o.o

Server time is utc for everyone. It's a standard.

You never have to worry about time zones.

The local time, no matter what server you are connecting to, will always be the time your physical location in the real world is.

Thanks but I meant the time local to where the server would most likely be, which is what I expected the server time to reflect. As Valkyrie explains above, however, apparently server time is not set to their local time but rather to base UTC.

Most companies use utc for their servers. Mine in the US does. It makes it much easier to coordinate time.

Thank you for the explanation. It does make sense. I just shouldn't make assumptions about what "server time" means.

There are many more reasons, but you will almost always find when an organisation runs servers in multiple countries they will standardise servers on Zulu (another word for UTC+0, indicated by the letter Z in a timestamp).

Heaps of reasons, a big one is that servers running on local time make log investigations very difficult.
