I think to earn the mentor crown you need to clear the savage tier and current ultimate in all 5 roles (tank healer physranged melee caster) that way you should know what you’re doing and are qualified to help people get better.

People who need mentor help ask things like "Where do I get that armor?" and "what does the sprout by my name mean?" and "Why did I die when those yellow arrows were on me?"...
I would hazard to say that maybe under 1% of people who are willing to ask for help are asking help for bleeding edge progression.
I mean there is a reason people call it the burger king crown on NA. All it takes is grinding, no skill. 99% of the time the worst players in a given party are the mentors. Most of them also are no help at all and are extremely rude to new players. NA novice network is a cesspool. Most of my friends have the crown and don't turn it on because at this point it's like putting up a sign saying "Im probably rude and/or bad at the game".
There are many players who just want the mentor crown to be a status symbol, like for clearing high end content, for example.People who need mentor help ask things like "Where do I get that armor?" and "what does the sprout by my name mean?" and "Why did I die when those yellow arrows were on me?"...

I've said again and again that I understand that.. but asking for the qualification for being a mentor to be more difficult or arduous misses the entire point of mentors being a guide for players who need basic assistance with the game.
Yeah.. remove the crown, get rid of that mount everyone queue cherry picks for. Make it voluntary and you'll get people genuinely willing to help rather than clout and symbol farming.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
They'd have to get rid of the crown, no status symbol such as watering can, no exclusive chat channel (especially that they can kick from), move the mount out of the roulette. Honestly, I don't think the system can be salvaged. Which is why I think it should be removed entirely. I just don't see any compelling cases for the necessity of a global chat channel, or even a novice chat. SE could literally just provide more resources in-game to help newer players. The roulette can be redone as well.I've said again and again that I understand that.. but asking for the qualification for being a mentor to be more difficult or arduous misses the entire point of mentors being a guide for players who need basic assistance with the game.

Who says it's misused? Shout is how we converse on NA servers. Doesn't make it any more or less right than any other differences between regions. It's how we do things. We don't have a problem with it. Why aren't we allowed to do things our own way like other regions can?The "vibing" sadly is just most of the times on the same level as the good old world of warcraft chat game where you take the name of a skill and the a word. It's a good example of how different japanese and western culture is. But the game is developed by japanese devs even if they take some inspiration and advice from western audiences their culture is still foreign to them and that way there will be always such misused things.
Like the wintrading that was plaguing feast, something that wasn't a thing on JP. Like the mentor system that is more a meme. The chat being a complete mess and spamming nonsense through the aether is just another example of how western culture is more a meme than a functional society. Which is, don't get me wrong, not bad at all but people always act so surprised when systems get misused and turned into the worst possible outcome, which is funny cause it happens everywhere all the time so people should be used to it by now.
its like reddit flair. who cares. seems people just have it just for the sake of having it.Like the title says, I think SE should remove the mentor crown.
This is really a band-aid fix to a bigger problem, which is that the requirements for achieving the mentor status are really easy and have little to do with your experience across a wide array of content.
Nevertheless, I think it would be a positive and simple change. Mentors receive a good amount of harassment in this game, which I don't think is ever warranted. Mentor or not, if someone is being rude or just acting clownish in general, two wrongs don't make a right, and its simple enough to blacklist them and move on.
That being said, I have never experienced any kind of harassment from being a mentor. I simply just don't wear the crown. I enjoyed the exp boost when it was relevant for me, and I get a kick out of reading NN chat; that's pretty much my whole mentor experience.
You don't need a crown beside your name to help new players. Furthermore, the crown has such a bad reputation in this game(even to new players) that they aren't going to ask mentors for help anyways.
And finally, removing the crown would eliminate the portion of mentors who only got the status to have the icon next to their name.
*Yes, I did write this in response to another post I saw about mentor harassment*
The mentor system doesn't work because the people in the best position to advise new players are making content for video or written guides instead. Trade Mentor is especially noticeable for this as I've got that in-game solely because I levelled all my DoL and DoH while following a well written guide and copying the crafting macros from it. All trade mentors could be replaced with a 15 minute YouTube video explaining the underlying mechanics of DoH/DoL and how to effectively use Teamcraft. They'd have to get rid of the crown, no status symbol such as watering can, no exclusive chat channel (especially that they can kick from), move the mount out of the roulette. As for Battle Mentor, it's basically the same thing. If you wanted to try high-end duties, the vast majority of mentors aren't the people you ask for advice, you watch or read a guide on the internet. Heck, if you just want to understand your class better or try something new, a guide is a much better. Again, you can replace basically all battle mentors with The Balance server on Discord and a few YouTube videos.
I understand why the mentor system was originally added and while it might've worked in a game with a much smaller player base, the issues with the system and much more noticeable on a player base of the current scale. A system doesn't have to exist just because it existed in the earlier days of the game.
You can safely remove the entire mentor system in favour of decent guide content. Square Enix could even update the guides on their own website, which do exist, by working with the existing communities that are making guides on YouTube or for Discord servers like The Balance.
The only elephant in the room is the two seat mount reward which probably accounts for like 95% of battle mentors anyway. This should remain in the game as either a reward for completing the pre-Stormblood MSQ (end of the free trial) or as a cash store item.
Remove the crown so some people stop power tripping while having it equipped.
Also, the amount of bad behaving mentor's is to much.
The last few bad experiences I can remember involved a mentor.
