The Mount Hunter's Notes: Things We Could Ride!

To take a small bit of a break from the negativity going around the forums of late, and at the behest of a few guildmates of mine, I've decided to make this thread, wherein I share some thoughts on things that might be cool as mounts. I'll label some of the obvious ones, true, but I hope to get some of the ones you all may have missed the first time around. As of right now, though, do mind I'm in Heavensward, and I may well come to add additional creatures as I become aware of and study them.

With that out of the way, here goes.

Starting off is one everyone may have noticed. A creature I've come across on a study of Marks, a monster that cuts a dashing figure, and who DRKs all across the world might know as the bane of Sidurgu, who just can't resist trying to solo him. I speak, of course, of none other then Vochstein, the Azure Scourge of the Gyr Abanian skies, and a griffon with very few peers indeed. Considering that we Warriors of Light already have two Griffons to our name...an eagle-colored one and one pale as the driven snow...I personally do not see why, after we defeat this creature, we should not be able to add him to our roster of saddle-bearing friends, especially considering our shared dislike of the Garlean expansion efforts.

The only way I can see us acquiring this badass for ourselves to ride, however, lies in the Hunt Seal system. As I've not yet reached Stormblood to confirm who it is that deals in seals over in the near and far east, I cannot name him, or her, but I feel they might be the one who could end up holding onto a Vochstein Horn. Or perhaps a sidequest chain by another Vochstein heir looking to reclaim what their family once held, perhaps culminating in a mano-a-birdo bossfight against the Azure Scourge...

Up next is something a tad more mundane. I'm actually legitimately surprised that, so far, none of the many and varied mounts we ride has made use of the Aurochs assets yet. Surely their size cannot be the issue, as we've ridden small Behemoths since the days of yore, so finding a beast of burden the right size to plant a saddle upon should be trivial. In this case, I point not toward the Aurochs themselves, though I'll not complain if such is the case(perhaps one of Kujata's calves a compassionate Marauder can recruit?). Instead, I point to cold, cold Ishgard, to the environs around the Falcon's Nest...and specifically, toward the massive, shaggy yaks that reside there. Yaks of such colossal girth would be excellent for travel in snowy regions, and come summer time, their shaved pelts would surely make ample fodder for the clothiers as well! Perhaps, when Ishgard is ready to reclaim some of the areas there, someone could discern a way to tame one of those brutish creatures...

...and to briefly remain in Ishgard, there is another creature there that would likely make an excellent mount. Namely, the renegade Ice Commanders that romp and stomp near the Dravanian Forelands...though the same could be said of Wandil, the guardian of Snowcloak, who is essentially just a larger version of them. And while the same can be said of regular Golems as well, I point to Ice Commanders specifically for two reasons. The striking nature of their icicle-laden design, and the peculiar shape of their heads, ideal to place a saddle upon! Surely, having gained the favor of Lady Ysayle, and Frozen Saint Shiva through her, someone must know the secret to creating non-hosile versions of these hulking, brutish humanoids...

Up next is an older friend of ours, both chronologically and in terms of our time spent in Eorzea. This friend is one we happened to chance upon during the ascent of Syrcus Tower, one of the Allagan Empire's biggest heavy-hitters and, in her off-time, a kindly dog enthusiast who deserves a good headpat or two. I speak, of course, of none other then Scylla of the Hounds. She has the right stature to ferry us across the realm, as one friend to another, and with all the arcane Allagan sorcery at her disposal, she might even be capable of some party tricks with which to wow the crowds. Would that it were possible to rescue such a kind soul from the clutches of the Syrcus...perhaps Emerpr Xande or the Cloud of Darkness itself holds the key to her liberation...

Agree about the blue griffin, should have another of the greenish-blue and white ones from Elpis-- Gryps.

Archaeornis, Gagana, Hornbill, Polar Bear (not the mount from '21 moonfire faire), Dzo/Yakow, Brobinyak, Amphiptere, Shelled Dragon-- there's a lot to use! So many of their monster models they can utilize... but yet make so few.

You may have to go into detail about Gryps, as well as some of the others. Minus the Archaeornis, I've seen those before, they're bird-like creatures that also dwell near Falcon's Nest. They could be interresting to ride.

But yeah, feel free to expound upon the virtues of all those you mentioned. Especially Gryps.

The Caribou model is so pretty and detailed (and my second choice after the Alkonost, which we now have). It's similar to the two antelope mounts in-game, yes, but also larger and enough of a difference to be distinct. My hope is that if not added in with the 6.0 patch cycle, that one of the zones in 7.0 includes more of the far north -be in the Blindfrost of Othard or more of the Great Empty around Sharlayan- with a new dailies tribe inspired by the Sami or First Nations of Canada and Greenland, and the mount that you earn from helping them is a caribou/reindeer.
