Hear me out: Should 14 have talent trees?

So lately there’s been a bunch of talk about people being really unhappy about job changes and general direction. The devs clearly want to keep the skill gap as small as possible and most of us hate their current approach. I think there may be a solution: talent trees.

I don’t mean anything as in depth as other games. Just maybe a few talents per job that slightly change how a few skills operate. For example, warrior has a talent that changes overpower from a circle to a cone. Sage has a talent that changes physis from a regen to a shield. Dark knight could have a talent that makes plunge deal no damage but applies soul survivor. Samurai has a talent choice where A: you lose kaiten but midare, kaeshi, and tsubame are guaranteed crits or B: you have hissatsu kaiten but the related skills deal less damage.
I didn’t completely think out the numbers or functionality, these are just examples.

In other words, those of us who preferred the gameplay of previous patches/expacs can have our cake and eat it and players who like the direction of job design can have and eat their cake. Would this happen? Probably not. But it could be fun to think about.

    no.

absolutely not. all that happens is people start kicking other people from raids for not having what people have decided are the optimal talents.

square already struggles with balancing issues.

The jobs themselves are the talent trees.

While I really enjoy the RP and customizability aspects of talent trees, they're not something I want in this game. Denji has the right of it, if you don't fit the current meta, there's a significant chance you'll get kicked from a party. The current class design is the best for this game and I prefer it to stay that way.

nah, that's a design for a game with more horizontal expression than 14 (or at least presents the illusion until the Meta is determined by tryhards and everything not-that is soft banned).

you'd need to build the game form the ground up to accomodate that kind of design, and it'd be hard to mesh it with the final fantasy-brand rigid classes. like sure you could slap dragoon and templar into one base class because they both use spears, with each as a spec, but that would detract from both's designs unless you went full over the top differences like lost ark or other korean spec-based mmo's (dragonica, elsword, ragnarok online, tree of savior, etc)

No, they already have trouble balancing all existing jobs + adding new ones, that's why they redux the PvP to 6-8 actions so they don't have as much trouble balancing it.

So if you haven't noticed in this game most of the tanks are casuals and the weird, stupid classes no one likes like Bards that typically Hardcore Players play are DPS.

What this game did was make all the popular classes Tanks so there won't be as much of a Tank shortage. When Heavenward came out years ago people were pissed because Dark Knights were put into a tank class, even though Dark Knights are known for being mainly a Damage Job.

That's why you always for the most part see the local Mechanics Nazi/whiner as a Bard or other DPS class. If they did talent trees there would be a shortage of healers and tanks. Believe me, there are a lot of Healers who just don't like healing as it is in this game and prefer DPSing.

Also, you would have a lot of tanks who would switch to a DPS Tree. Also the Hardcore Minority is not large enough to make up for the tank shortage so even if you made a Bard have a Tank Tree you would see longer wait times.

I'm not in favor of it. What usually happens with talent trees is that players end up choosing the most powerful talents anyways. You're going to have multiple people running almost the same talent specs, so in effect, what does adding a talent tree really do?
