    Need vs. Greed; official stance?

I think this is best placed for "Items" in general, excuse me if this post is wrongly placed.

As I've recently had some arguments on rolling Need vs. Greed, can someone enlighten me on the official stance of SE on this?
From the wording alone rolling "Need" would require a player to have some actual need for the item (upgrading your main/alt-job gear, minion/mount not yet owned etc.).
While the wording "Greed" suggests everything that is related to Greed (e.g. rolling on an item to turn into GC, rolling an unbound minion to sell it on the MB).
Is there any official stance on this?

    No official stance but generally

If you can press Need, press Need. If you can’t, then Greed. NBD, if someone misses out on an item you rolled for they can try again.

This is how I've always seen it. As far as I know this is how the playerbase as a whole views it.

I personally press greed if I don't need something and merely want to turn it into GCs or if I'm going to feed it to the next vendor. But if the need button is available, it's totally fine too use it.

Personally I only need stuff if I know I need it or are unsure..

Recently this has become less of an issue as a lot of stuff now has little ticks on it if you already have it. Like cards, orchestration rolls, minions. But I do wish they'd expand on it further. Like maybe add a tick to something if you have it in your glamour dresser. Or hairstyles if you already have them..

But I think the only general rule is if you want to be able to need play the right job..

A lot of the other stuff isn't terrible either. Untradable minions and stuff for example you cannot roll on at all f you already have.

I started to work on my desynthesis levels, and i just hit need on everything i can. Before this i used to need so i can turn in items for grand company scripts for ventures and repair items. Its good they added check box for already obtained items, im happy to pass on claimable items i already have.

The question I tend to ask myself: "Does it only justify my personal enrichment?" (e.g. earning more Gil) => Definition of Greed
I've seen countless people just hitting "Need" on items Sprouts (and I also mean lvl 90ies rolling against fresh sprouts on their very first job) and thus denying them their gear-upgrades.
In my opinion that's harmful for sprouts and even lessens their play-experience.

I know that some people tend to hit "Greed" when sprouts are present, but there's more that always hit "Need" regardless.

There's no official stance on Need versus Greed other than what is programmed into the system. Players currently using a job able to equip the item get priority in the loot roll. That's pretty much it. Upgrades aren't given priority because wanting an item for Glamour is also considered valid.

It's up to you if you'd rather Greed when you have the option to Need. Personally, I only use Need if I actually need it as an upgrade (or it's a minion/orchestrion roll/etc. that I want but still haven't collected). If I want a particular piece of loot badly enough, I'll run the content solo unsynced if it's an option so I don't have to compete on a roll.

They had temporarily experimented with an all Greed roll system in Alliance Raids but had to quickly revert it when things did not go well.

I second this. Unless it's a glamour I want then that need button gets mashed right away.

Personal opinion but I only Need if the item is an upgrade to what I am currently wearing, OR if I see someone else hitting Need on something that is not an upgrade to something they are wearing. IE - I’m on Monk, and the Healer in all 590/600 gear rolls Need on the 360 healer item that dropped, then I will roll Need on any other items I can in that run.
