Can we also rip off GW2 mounts?

After having peeked at the WoW expansion announcement and seeing their new dragon riding just being a rip off from Guild Wars 2 mounts I did wonder, why can't ffxiv have the same quality of mounts? It is one thing in guild wars 2 that seems really great!

Rip it off! I want epic gryphon flying!

To me it looked really gimmicky but I dunno how it was implemented in the GW2 expansion since I haven't played it yet.
The gliding at least felt like it mattered more in HoT, mounted combat is rarely done well imo tho which I heard WoW is getting?
I honestly can't think of an example where it was done well.

Yeah, I think they mentioned being able to shoot fireballs or something while flying. Vehicle quests in WoW were awful so I was just face-desking when they were gushing about it. Like, I stopped watching after they introduced the revamped profession system, and... goodness. They talked about the dragon flying in every segment aside from the class/profession sections. It seems a bit too overhyped...

I'm not looking for mounted combat just the cool flying that feels a bit more real!

When did they say there was mounted combat? The Dracthyr have some flying combat abilities but that's not the same thing as Dragonriding having a mounted combat element. This seems more like a flying version of LOTRO's War-steed system but without the combat part. The one flying combat ability they showed off for the Dracthyr Evoker was basically a combination of a warrior's Charge ability with the Frost DK's Frostwyrm's Fury ability that basically calls down a frostwyrm for close air support, laying down an icy column attack that flies overhead in front of you. This one just physically moves the Dracthyr player.

I agree and disagree at the same time, i don't know if you tried the pod mount but the way you swing when flying feel less static than when you fly with other mount and i wish that they tweaked a little flying to feel more ... in motion ?

Just because something is ok doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. Guild wars 2 mounts feel great and they look great, having skins for the mounts and all is really cool. I would love them to improve the mount movement and expand our chocobo more too.

I absolutely adore GW2's mount system and would consider it the best I've personally experienced. Each mount comes with its own particular set of skills and traits, and they're used for different reasons. The raptor is pretty quick and can leap over large distances. The skimmer lets you travel on water and is immune to most ground hazards. The griffon lets you glide. The rollerbeetle is incredibly fast, can knock down enemies, and can break open secret walls. There is more to each mount, but that at least gives an idea. There are 9 mounts in total.

One thing that I really appreciate is that there is no true-flying mount. You have a griffon for gliding (and you CAN go pretty far if you're skilled with it), and you have a skyscale which can gain height, but both require using the terrain to take advantage of their skills, and both will eventually need to come back to ground. You're not able to simply bypass entire zones by flying straight over them.

Another thing is that the animations and physics of the mounts themselves are great and just feel more real. They lean into turns, they look behind them when you're walking backwards, they don't instantly come to a grinding halt when you stop moving forward. Little details can add A LOT of flavor.

In comparison, XIV's mounts and flying feels.....cheap. Oh hey! You, elephant! You can fly! Adorable fat cat? Up in the air you go! It doesn't make any sense, although in XIV I suppose there's little reason why you shouldn't fly everywhere due to a lack of overworld activities (that's a rant for another day). But yeah, when everything can do everything, it can feel boring.

As far as XIV's mount animations, I'd say they're OK, but nothing great. They are totally lacking on physics though, and they feel stiff when moving around. You're basically just tilting on an axis, and it doesn't feel or look great.

With all that said, I don't think you're wrong with your statement. Yes, the flying and mount system accomplishes what XIV is going for. However, that doesn't mean its fantastic, and there are definitely better mount systems out there which put it to shame (IMO). But again, it gets the job done for what XIV wants. It is what it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
