Sounds great. The way that they should have done this patch was having us go to a bar like we did at the beginning but actually meeting our new party members there. Something like that 1.0 cinematic where we get a taste of the Season 2 cast. We go hunt for treasure in the dungeon, actually get to keep the treasure instead of yet another super dooper altruistic endeavour, and finish off with a campfire scene where we get to learn more about their backstories. Then at the end they can tease the void.

Instead they opted for whatever 6.1 was, bringing back the same stale old characters who've been around for the last 10 years. At least they teased us with the void, but given the writers' mission to subvert our expectations no matter how late or how sudden, there's a good chance we'll end up somewhere entirely different in 7.0.

Except, the WoL never cared about the treasure, only the adventure and the journey. Using the treasure to help Radz-At-Han recover from the Final Days is very much in character, especially when it turns out that it already belongs to Vrtra who intended to use it for the same thing. You make an awful lot of assumptions of where things are going when we dont even have the slightest inkling of what is going to happen in the story. We literally have no information whatsoever outside of the small amount of breadcrumbs that they gave to us.

I;m sorry, I just don't care about this. It's not interesting. It's not imporant. It's not relevant to my character's interests. Im sorry to say but, I think you're gonna have to sit through some more world building and meandering in these 6.x patches. whether you like it or not. First story is finished, done and dusted. We're not continuing a plot. We're STARTING one. Staring a new story means you've gotta set the pieces in place first. And even then its not like this patch was entirely purposeless. They seem to have a clear direction they wanna go in - they wanna play with the 13th/the void and the other shards, which is cool! they've had some quests here and there that have been hinting at the possibility, and its cool for it to finally get the spotlight. Unfortunately, we only ever get short and fleeting glimpses of the void... The crystal tower series, shadowbringers role quests, and a few job quests here and there. A lot of basic unknowns that gotta get sorted out before we can take a deeper look.

Hitting the gas on the new plot doesn't make sense narratively, considering where the scions stand at the end of endwalker. I mean heck, even the WOL is technically on a break at the beginning of these MSQ quests. The questions proposed in this patch series are not burning, immediate, world-need-saving points of contention. We're just looking into this for curiosity's sake. This is supposed to be a breath of fresh air before they start doin the big stuff, and For what it is I think 6.1 does a good job of capturing the idea that we're lighthearted adventurers again, and it utilizes that as a solid basis to begin moving us toward what seems to be their next big plot beat, which, as of right now at least, seems to be the void/13th + other shards. Expecting immediate heavy plot advancement from a .1 patch is just, expecting waaay too much.

I really enjoy this game's story but I agree. It's definitely not perfect. There's WAY too much fluff/filler and it can get very annoying. They should've focused on showing the effects of the Final Days, maybe more Garlemald quests, etc, instead of the Loporrits stuff and the fetch quests.

In these respects, the patch greatly failed in delivering.
Well, maybe that wasn't the intention of the patch at all. I'm honestly not sure where everyone has gotten this season 2 idea except as their own preference or what they would do. The devs have certainly never called it that. When Yoshi-P mentioned the Codex in the Live Letter, he said it's something they could use if they decided to make a new starting point in the future, but they have never said "This is the new starting point and it will not connect to anything from before at all". And given the way this game constantly references back to even the smallest details in past lore, I don't see them ever doing that.

I think people had very unreasonable expectations for what "Newfound Adventure" meant that weren't based on anything the developers had confirmed and that's where your dissatisfaction is stemming from.

So...now you're against character development? He moved past the reasons that made him angry and was able to embrace a new path. You claim the Scions aren't well written but then just want to erase one character's progression because you prefer to have AngryMan back.

Interviews touched on the battle of morals returning as a concept sometime after Endwalker's launch. And yeah, the angry guy with a revenge story that was still happening was more entertaining than the guy who *had* a revenge story and is now mellowed out. In any case, a new cast for Season 2 isn't an unreasonable ask but if they want to continue with a cast of immortal Scions then I have little confidence in the potential of future storytelling given the stifled nature of those characters.

    omg yes, yes omg yes.

I'm still bitter that over the course of 10 years of fighting Primals, Gods and beings with power that is beyond our comprehension, everyone was so wrapped in plot armor they were never in any danger. It took so much out of the story that it took all the tension out of the msq. I mean, prior to the fight with Emet, he rained giant pointy things on the scions and missed every single one of them. During the final days, not a single hair was lost, not even a single tear in their jackets.

While I didn't want any of the scions to die, well except Y'shtola, Alphinoob and Graha, having them all come out without even a scratch was infuriating. I would have much rather had some main characters die here and there to make the story better and more intense, than just rolling my eyes and thinking "oh golly gee no" whenever one of them got "hurt".

That being said, they can still exist in the world, we could still see them here or there, which would make sense since they disbanded and want to keep their heads low, but nope, can't have that cause reasons. The story has all kinds of issues beyond this and anyone who is not blinded by sheer devotion can see it. But they really should have taken the XI approach and given us a brand new cast of characters with minor interaction between us and the scions every once in a great while with each new story and expansion from here on out.

You talk about scions being poorly written and then type out the most cliche plot point ever with "new" companions that you'd likely equally complain about. Sounds like FFXIV story telling just isn't for you.

Its 6.1 and the start of a brand new story....We're not going to get major plot points and potential new characters introduced until the patch right before 7.0 or in 7.0 proper.

Why not? There is literally nothing stopping SE from doing so, except SE. There was a finality to the end of 6.0, they even said they don't want to be seen together. But what was the very first thing they did? One scion sure, but nearly all of them?

They could have easily put us in a situation where we meet some new companions. I mean, have you ever read a prologue before? Many authors will keep the main protagonist and put them in an entirely new situation because they can. They are the author, there are absolutely no literary rules stating, "When finishing one story, you must keep the same characters while introducing a new story".

Stop making excuses for poor writing, planning and execution. the white knighting has been one of the biggest detriments to this game and it's really showing.

I'd like to add that a lot of important story beats hinge on the fact the npc you're talking to is important to you. I don't care for G'raha or Thancred, but they chew a lot of screen. There's very few options to change who you interact with, and by swapping some dialogue and characters for scenes based on player preference would do a LOT to the kind of storytelling we've seen in EW.

Let dialogue options matter. Story is the main draw of 14 so let us develop relationships with the characters we actually like. I promise nothing is lost by not seeing G'raha hump your leg for a hundredth time if you don't like it.
