(Myths of the Realm) What were the Twelve like in 1.0?

I know that the team said something about scrapping 1.0 worldbuilding for 3.x onwards, but with the 12 being the stars of the new raid (and what they've claimed about themselves there), I was wondering what the 1.0 lore around the Twelve was.

Were they important in the lore/story back then? How were they depicted/mentioned?

E.g. poking around the 'net, I saw something about them being modelled on previous-era Archons. Obviously that doesn't fit with 6.1 version, but still if someone knows factoids like that, I think it'd be cool to hear about them.

The lore of the Twelve in 1.0 was... nothing really different from how it is here in ARR onwards. The original lore stated that the Twelve once walked the land among men in the Age of the Gods, only to leave the mortal world behind after the First Umbral Calamity, and from then on every citystate that rose in Eorzea throughout history took a member of the Twelve as their guardian deity (and that past wars between the citystates in Eorzea were considered wars of the heavens).

Apart from that, there was little indication the Twelve had any actual direct influence on the world in general - gameplay wise there was a mechanic called 'Guardian's Blessing' that you could activate when starting a levequest which acted as a temporary EXP boost, but that was scrapped and replaced with Rested EXP from spending time in hamlets, and in 1.0's character creation, your chosen Guardian of the Twelve determined elemental resistances and weaknesses based on the god or goddess's own element (like, chosing Azeyma for instance gave a slight resistance against fire but a slight weakness against water and ice), which remained in ARR but has been effectively neutered and no longer has any effect on gameplay really (especially given elemental attributes were all but eliminated from gameplay).

Then there was the Deity Stones scattered around Eorzea that each feature a mark of the Twelve which were first carved by Louisoix back then (as part of his plan to ultimately reseal Bahamut by summoning the Twelve's power), and which the player could get a ring of their chosen Guardian when they prayed at the relevant Deity Stone as part of the Seventh Umbral Era storyline.

Additionally, Hydaelyn as a deity was not even known (Her existence was only vaguely hinted at in the most obtuse of terms, and not by name), so strange phenonema like the Echo was naturally chalked up to the Twelve being responsible (such as Minfilia, who actually named her secret research organization of Echo-users that preceded the Scions the Path of the Twelve).

Of course, ARR changed that, and the Twelve kind of ended up falling by the wayside as Hydaelyn took front and centre as an actual deity who was directly influencing events. That no longer being the case, it seems the Twelve are once again returning to prominence in the story, so it remains to be seen how SE is going to take it from here.

For what it's worth, these deity stones are still around, and you visit almost all of them in the Ceremony of Eternal Bonding quest; Nald'thal had two, on in each Ul'Dah zone, but only one of them is accessible anymore. They were also where all the Scions were praying in the End of an Era cutscene, and of course, Moenbryda's funeral was at the stone of Thaliak.

I've never played 1.0, but I also found that lore tidbit, which is probably the same one you found: Rhalgr is assumed to have been based on Archon Ahldbhar, who was one of the Archons of the Sixth Calamity (of water). I remember this lore tidbit because it was expressed in the delightful description of "a bag of angry muscles".

Oh it's cool that they were a bit more present in gameplay back then by the sound of it, like tying gameplay with the world. ... They're just crafting/gathering skills now right?

Are these in roughly similar places now? The non-city maps were changed a lot weren't they, and some of the stones IIRC are in pretty out-the-way random places.

I think it was something along those lines that I read. Is that the only instance of being based on someone (other than the possible Azem thing)?

Rhalgr, the god himself, wasn’t based on Archon Ahldbhar, it’s just that the Archon was so muscular that he was compared to Rhalgr. Depictions of Rhalgr were then modeled after the archon. And I’m not sure if the writers remember the quest in 1.0 where all this was mentioned anyway since Ahldbhar was a Roegadyn and Rhalgr is an Elezen, or at least has pointy ears like one.

This was the script from the quest:

You must've seen renderings of Rhalgr at some point─in paint or stone. Looks like a bag of angry muscles in a mage's robes, right? Aye, well, those are done in the likeness of Archon Ahldbhar.
Additionally, we were robbed of a good story that never got picked up after 1.0. Ahldbhar actually turned traitor and threw in with the Ascians, but we never found out what happened with that.

I'm curious about why Menphina's symbol is that of the 2 moons with the smaller moon being Dalamud. Unless they reveal to us that its not actually 2 moons but depiction of Etheirys and the moon
