    It's still 16:9 (1.77:1) so no you really don't. You can only have it so wide till it loses it's benefits.

    The landscape method is more popular because majority of users use old TN based monitors.

    The only real games where having such wide ratios will help you would be RTS type games.

    Shooting games? No unless you're quite a good distance from the screen to see all three monitors at once or constantly move your head left or right your head will often be focused at the center screen and by the time you see someone on the far right or left screen you'll be shot down.

    There's also Game UI, some game don't support such wide ratios properly and can have the UI too far apart. For example, health bar on the upper left corner of the left screen and ammunition on the lower right corner pf the right screen.


    Then there's desk space but that's self explanatory.
