New player seeking advice about classes

    Hi I'm new!

Basicly, I need some help choosing a class to level up primarily/ first. Preferably one that goes well with a Thaumaturge and a Gladiator.

I was thinking about Wildwood Elezen, Lancer?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks alot

I would recomend leveling a mage class first for several reasons:
    1) it will give you cure/sacrafice which will cut down on downtime a ton.
    2) if you level thurm to 20 you will never run out of mp in a fight again.

after that it is your choice what to level.

Since I am basically a thm and glad main so to say this is what I am doing.

    Thurmaturge Main:
Thurmaturge you are going to want to level Conj.
This will give you access to another cure, fastcast, chainspell, protect, shell, stoneskin, shockspikes, sleep and several other good abilities.

For the mage classes it is pretty easy, just have to level both of them and they complement each other perfectly.

good supplement skills would be the blinking skills from Lnc and Archer these negate a whole attack from a mob, and Sentinel from Pld This removes like 80% of the dmg you take for 30secs or so. Can also combine with several other shield skills for dmg reduction when soloing which thurm is a beast at in the upper levels.

    Now for glad

Glad by far negates the most dmg when it has the right support abilities.

With defender always up and a cycle of Aegis BoonII (converts dmg to hp) => Deflection (prevents all dmg) => Sentinel (Prevents upwards of 90% of the dmg you take) => rampart(defence+) +Outmanuever(defence+)+Obsess if 1 mob(defence+) +Feather foot (Big evasion boost).

Use Emulate when it is up, and toss provoke/taunt/wardrum when you have stamina to do it.

Doing this Almost all the mobs, even the NMs hit me at rank 45 for like 0-20dmg (200-300 with only the defensive traits up). Doing this I deal next to no dmg though, so this would be for a party only obviously.

Gladiator it depends on what you want to do, if you want to be a main tank to optimize it you have a ton of work to do. A pld like job (assuming you know FFXI, if not it is the main tank of the game) will require you to level almost all the classes to a very high level.

-Thurm to Rank 40 at least. This gives you Mp regaining tools, Firm Conviction Increased defense when casting, Emulate which will reduce dmg by all spells of that mob by like 40-60% in most cases, and a few other decent skills like punishing bards which deals the dmg you take directly back to the mob.

-Conj to Rank 48. This gives you higher level protect/shell, fastcast, and Cure 3. This will let you help cure yourself and keep yourself alive.

-Mar to Rank 48. Defender II for increased Defense, several hate pulling abilities, and a + enmity trait.

-Lancer to Rank 36: Gives you Diversion, will let you blink (avoid dmg) from close range attacks.

-Archer to Rank 36: Gives you Decoy, will let you blink a magic attack.

-Pug to rank 42: Gives you Featherfoot II (massive boost to evasion for 1 attack), second win (A self cure ability), accomplice (transfers hate from someone else to you) and Taunt II (pulls hate). As well as a +10% cure effect of you.

Of course your shield as well which has several of your main tanking abilities.. this will level at the same rate as your gladiator and if you level multiple jobs will hit 50 before your glad.

Now obviously you do not need all this to play a tank or a mage, but to maximize either one of them it will take quite alot of time.

-->This is my guide to Lancer<--

Just a quick run down of all the abilities from different jobs you'll want for lancer and how to choose stats.

Hi, Artagnan. Welcome to the game.

Xatsh has given you some good tips for end-game. But since you're just starting out, I'll try to offer some more tips geared more toward a beginner.

First, race doesn't really matter. It has a small effect on your stats when you start, but you're going to level up incredibly fast, and with the ability to allocate your own stats, your beginning stats won't matter at all. I've seen Lalafell Gladiators, and Galka (err, I mean Reordyn?) mages. Just choose whichever race you think looks the best.

Second, when you're starting out, Glad and Thaum are two totally different classes. Gladiators are the generally the best tanks in the game, so the stat they need most is Vitality. And since they're melee, they tend to depend more on Strength and Dexterity to hit stuff.

On the other hand, Thaums are mages. So the most important stats for a Thaum are going to be Mind, Piety, and Intelligence. (Having said that, even mages want some Vitality. It boosts your hit points, so you can take more hits before dying.)

So there's not a lot of crossover between Thaums and Gladiators, at least at low to mid levels.

My advice would be to try all the classes. Right now, you can level up several classes to level 10 really quickly. I'd try them all out, and see which ones you like.

Just so you know, the cross-class skills that will help Glads are different than the cross-class skills that help Thaums.

For Gladiator, you're probably going to want to level Pugilist to at least level 6 to get Second Wind (which gives you an instant boost to your HP). And you're probably going to want to level Marauder to level 6 to get Blood Bath (on your next hit, you get an HP boost based on the damage you cause).

Beyond those, the class that seems to help Gladiators the most is Marauder, because they have some really good abilities to gather hate from mobs. Leveling Marauder will really help you become a better tank.

All in all, I'd suggest that you just try out all the classes to see which ones you like. Lancers are more damage dealers, and have fewer HP. Archers do a ton of damage, but they're ranged attackers, it's can be expensive to keep buying arrows, and they have fewer HP. Marauders have the most HP in the game, and are the best at attacking multiple mobs at once. And Pugilists can also be effective tanks, but they rely more on evasion. Pugilists basically do two smaller attacks (compared to everyone else's 1 attack), so they gather a ton of TP, which allows them to throw out a bunch of special attacks.

Right now, Thaumaturges are probably the most powerful class in the game. They're geared more towards "dark" magic. They can debuff enemies, have some incredibly strong nuke spells, and their Area of Effect spells shoot out in a really large cone. Conjurers are a somewhat weaker mage class, but have some really effective heal/buff spells, and their AoE spells shoot out in a circle.

So just try everything and see what you enjoy playing most. And have fun!

Thanks for all the info guys
Gave me alot of insight into the game.

Now I feel abit like a jackass as I didn't clarify properly.
What I meant with: "Preferably one that goes well with a Thaumaturge and a Gladiator.", is that I have two friend's who's starting the game at the same time as me, and as such we want a solid 3 character party.

So would a lancer build go well with two other players playing that as their main builds? (Thanks for the link Jackdaniels)

Looking now, I do believe I'm stuck in previous MMO's setup of "this class does A and this does B and this one is a C".
I did play FFXI, but that was almost 6-7 years ago, cannot even remember anymore.

No matter, your info will really come in handy anyway

Sorry for the confusion and misleading, really wasn't intended.

    -Thanks, Art

Edit: Also, if I put say my stats point wrong, is there possibilities to refund them somehow?

There's Reassign button on bottom-left of Point Allotment window.
Once you hit it, your attributes will go down for certain amount and you gain that much bonus point back.
You need to wait before you can hit Reassign button again.
I'm not sure about how long you'll wait but it's about an hour or more depend on your total level.

Ahhhh. Now I see what you were saying. Sorry, I can be kind of dense sometimes. I'd ask you to say it slowly so I can understand, but ... well, maybe type it slowly?

Yes, Lancer would compliment a Gladiator and Thaumaturge well. Glad can tank, the Thaum can heal and nuke, and you can concentrate on DPS. (One beginner tip for DPS: if you stand behind the mob, you can avoid a lot of low level mobs' AoE attacks, and you get more critical hits when attacking from behind.) And I know I'm repeating myself, but feel free to try out other classes. Or maybe switch up roles with your mates. That's one of the big advantages of the game. It also gives you the advantage of increasing your physical level -- which makes a huge difference on your ability to take down low level mobs -- and you get the abilities from other classes to mix into your current job. Play around and see what you enjoy most.

And like Luna said, you can reassign your stat points any time by using the "Reassign" button. When you're just starting out, you can reassign all of them at once. (Later on, when you've leveled up a bunch and got a bunch of stat points allocated, you can only reassign 1/4th of them at one time, and have to wait to reassign the rest. It takes a few hours of waiting to reassign them all.) But it's generally very easy.
