The FF9 gear ability system is what I was anticipating or FFTA style. Learning abilities from gear. Wearing the same type of gear allows those abilities to stack up.

i.e. White Mage staff allowed you to use White Mage abilities. Robes improve caster stats via learned traits. Switching to other robes allows you to maintain robe traits. Switching to heavy armor, you might not benefit from robe traits.

At least in terms of a leveless, Armoury-driven system.

I think if the old FF14 stamina system had been reworked some, it would have functioned closer to XIII's battle system. I think the chain, stagger, and wound mechanics would have added pretty in-depth, quick paced combat on top of incapacitation.
