Unable to detect directx device crashing error?

I recently updated my video card to an nvidia gtx 680, and now I get these crash errors "Unable to detect directx device" often maybe after 2-10minutes of playing.(in cities only so far)
I've tried the newest nvidia drivers and the ones included on the cd..
Is there any way to fix this? Or do I have to wait for nvidia to ugrade drivers? Or is this an error with FFXIV?

Hi, new player. I am having this issue as well. The time frame sounds close too (around 10 minutes). Tried to update Video driver but that did not help.

Computer stats:
Windows 7 Home 64 bit
Intel i7 Q740
4GB memory
Directx 11
Nvidia GeForce GTS 350M 1GB

Do you guys play in windowed mode or full screen? I have been playing in windowed mode since release and I get those errors frequently... most of the time, it is when I go to another window (alt+tab), but sometimes it happens without changing windows at all. I will admit that it doesn't happen nearly as often as you are describing, however.

It may be some sort of compatibility issue with the new drivers since I know the 600~ series is a comparatively new set. As for Diadumenos... I don't know what your problem would be. Because you are using a 300~ series card, I am assuming it is several years old. This would give Nvidia more than enough time to tweak the compatibility with FFXIV.

I like to play in full-screen mode. The crash problem seems to occur more often though than in windowed but it still happens. I do not alt+tab when playing. The screen goes black and I will get the alert window. I have yet to log out of the game. It always crashes before Im ready to leave =/

FFXIV does not play well with others..as in other programs. Turn off any and all programs running in the background on your PC, esp (but not limited to) all programs that access the Internet.

Any program that "checks the internet for updates" is usually the culprit. Some will be on your taskbar but unfortunately many are hidden. Check your Task Manager and click on the Applications tab. You will possibly be horrified at how many programs are running and slowing down your whole system (not to mention crashing your game).

Turn off/exit/disable everything that doesn't kill your Internet Connection is my advice, but be careful and good luck.

Well did some testing thanks to CPUID Hardware monitor.

Took some pre-game, immediately post-crash readings (had application running while game was running), and post-game "log out" readings.

Rational was that maybe the game was crashing due to over exertion forcing the dreaded "Death by Directx".
GPU temps (C)
pre-game = 41
post-crash = 70
post-game = 69

CPU temps (C)
pre-game = 50
post-crash = 78
post-game = 76

HDD temps (C)
pre-game = 43
post-crash = 40
post-game = 42

The temps could not have changed that much before i got them. The windows pop up for "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 296.10 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." had not disappeared yet.

Testing for same duration then logging out however yielded semi-inconclusive results. The temperatures were very close to the crash temps. So next time I am going to play around with settings some more. I do not feel comfortable joining a pt until i get this figured out. The shut downs are just too random atm. The saga continues...
