A slow & unresponsive battle system isn't new, neither is exhausting grind and minimal quests with no rewards or goals other than getting gear.

in eq2 it could've been "deck out your house with awesome stuff" or "buy the biggest house"
in swg it could've been "build a city", "deck out your ship" "deck out your house"
but yeah usually if its not housing its gear, at least for the individual player.

That's my point. It's nothing new.
Even still, don't you think their vision should be bigger than just: "let's imitate a bunch of games?"
Even if they had taken it upon themselves to make FFXIV a new and improved FFXI, it begs the question: improved how? What's the direction they should take to improve FFXI?
When making a game, a definitive direction is needed first and foremost. Only after this should other games be looked at.
I think the closest thing we got from Yoshi is that he said he thinks of games as Themeparks, and that he wants to give players lots of things to do.
