I feel like this is a very difficult issue for SE, especially in America, because even now there are bills in place to uphold traditional thinking of genders & identity for kids, and SE is trying to appeal to the new generation of gamers.

I feel that SE doesn't want to be caught up in a US state legal battle with parents that oppose the new thinking of gender identifications for their kids.
This is definitely a hot topic, and not something I think that can be done without careful consideration of not only US laws, but also respecting laws of other countries dealing with these sensitive topics.
