On the bright side at least now they can remove Hagakure like they wanted in Shb. Without Kaiten it's only function is to reset your sen counter during phase transitions now.

I couldn't agree with you more. Even if removing Kaiten hasn't changed DPS by a huge degree (around 3% maximum in a crit-buff heavy comp), the class now feels like a crucial part of it is missing.
Kaiten bridged the gap between your normal abilities and your BIG ANIME FINISHER. The extra damage boost led to some massive numbers, which were always fun to see. Not to mention that the animation for Kaiten seamlessly transitioned into Midare. With the new potencies and lack of kaiten it now there feels like there is hardly any difference between abilities. I finally settled on SAM because I liked the playstyle and the class fantasy. But the changes really do a lot of damage to the fantasy of the "one-cut-man" that Samurai is supposed to have.
Hello, another samurai who made an account just to voice my opinion on how bad the changes are.
First of all, I was trying to be open minded about changes, but after trying new samurai in savage raids, new extreme and unreal content, I have to say the jobs feels worse to play in every aspect compared to previous version. Removal of Kaiten makes the Kenki management close to non-existent, and Shinten in itself if pretty boring ability. Whole class and power fantasy was building up resources and then finishing with a huge move (Midare) for massive damage, this was enhanced with Kaiten having a cool animation, like preparing for huge attack as master swordsman. Now even the big hitters are ruined, since they do pathetic damage compared to before. I know the damage numbers will roughly be the same, but it doesnt feel good to go through my rotation just to finish with 23k crit wet noodle Midare. This new changes really dont feel good to play, please revert them ASAP. As for addressing the "button bloat", there were far more obvious abilities to remove, like making Ikishoten and Ogi into a one button, consolidating Guren and Senei into 1 ability and making Shoha 2 into a direct upgrade for Shoha 1. If the problem was having too many ogcd buttons, it doesnt help it in that way either, since now you just spam Shnten insted of Kaiten.
Overall, changes are massively disappointing, ruining the fun and class fantasy of the jobs and I hope they will be addressed very soon.
+1 to OP. Samurai feels absolutely awful now. I am legitimately considering gearing another job for my static.
Had mained Sam since it came out((controller)), the amount of other things they could of done and have been suggested multiple times is just crazy. If dragoon can have actions evolve why then not Sam if the goal was to reduce bloat. A simple fix for Ogi and the entire iaijustu system but instead they took a sledgehammer to the job.
Please revert 6.1 changes.
SAM enjoyer here to do my part:
Kaiten was a beautiful piece of flavor, and while I understand that it's akin to Enochian in the sense that it's an extra button you always want to press, it added a sense of excitement to use your next Iaijutsu. It would be awesome to see it come back in a different form in the future.
However, at the moment, SAM feels like it has lost its class identity in the big hits and cool katana flair: the rotation feels flat alongside the damage. I am discouraged from playing the class, despite being a SAM player since a bit into the ARR epilogue when I subscribed to the game back in ShB 5.3. Unless news of a 6.1X patch to adjust SAM or revert the changes come to light, I will instead be levelling DRG and trying to rock that for my Savage static instead.
Thanks for reading. Nothing but love for the game and I hope to see the best for it!
Former SAM main. I played it for 10 minutes and disliked it as much as I thought. I will play other jobs now, but would prefer to have old SAM back.
They just removed the ability to crit with Midare and lowered its potency (compared to midare + kaiten). They just changed combat text.
Good work ruining a job because an excel graph of DPS variance in high end raids had a tiny bump in it. Thanks blizzard.
Also made a forum account to post, never did so before. So here I go.
This just ain't it. When I read Kaiten was being removed and potency's adjusted, I expected some small nerfs to things that were effected by Kaiten, such as
Ogi Namikiri reduced from 900 to 800
Midare Setsugekka reduced 660 to 600
So okay, yea those weren't to bad, Kaiten effected them
but these??? They weren't effected by Kaiten?
Kaeshi: Namikiri 1350 TO 800
Kaeshi: Setsugekka 990 TO 600
I was expecting something around 1350 to 1200 and 990 to 850 but instead they got gutted. SAM then got other weaponskills and abilities nerfed/buffed by small minute amounts that were or weren't affected by Kaiten, that looks to be in attempt to shift that damage loss from our big hitters to combo generators so now our big hitting abilities....feel like a wet noodle which is what it felt like SAM was all about.
I get future proofing, but this just don't feel like the right way to go about it. If Kaiten was removed for "button bloat" that bloat feels like it got replaced by instead of me using Kaiten in openers I just do more Shinten spam. It just don't feel good to hit Shinten spam. Also the animation for Kaiten was just mmmm bellissimo.
Could have just taken Shoha I and II and baked them together and dropped the potency a small amount to compensate. Also SE are still on the path of making jobs easier to play, but didn't remove the positional requirements on Kasha and Gekko? Could have got rid of True North instead of Kaiten and not touch potency at all and just the changes to Shoha and removing positionals if they want to reduce button bloat.
Lets be honest though, SAM will probably see Shoha I and II baked together as a new trait come 7.0.
