A server wide event has been done before on other games. One very successful example would be the Obsidian event that counted down to the giant insectoid dungeon in WOW, so large it had its own special mounts for use traversing in the dungeon, and guilds could compete for a hard to finish questline, in order to access the dungeon early as well as gain a unique, missable insect mount.

Didn't play WoW besides the free month on release, but I saw a youtube video of the event you are mentioning, and that is what I have in mind.
The boss doesn't have to be a staff member since each server would pop the boss at a different time I suppose, but I think it could make it harder since it would be a real person.

Since there is only 10 servers, and I was thinking the boss would take more than a two or three days to beat so all time zones would get to experience knocking down some of his HP; the boss would be automated so the staff can sleep but at prime times for each region the couple of staffers running the character across different servers could move around more freely and do some more strategic play. then after a while switch it back to automate.

Also since all regions would experience it have what the boss is saying be shown in each language(english players wont see japanese or german etc) each time it talks it will be shown in players native language like an NPC so it would have to be canned messages. Not like the news reporters who I've only met in french and japanese but never english...

Also for helping in the event you could add a couple of achievements.
Killing a certain number of garlean lowlies
Dealing atleast a small portion of damage to the boss
and keeping the boss from being cured any by conjurers.

The awards for these could be issued by each grand company. And it could be some sort of magitek ring(nothing amazing maybe a level 30 piece just to show you were there.) but since it is magitek have it be a unique stat not seen on any other current equipment type
