I want to preface this by saying I’m not interested in a debate on Twitch or streaming in general. Yet after watching a few a streamers I find it annoying when chat gets (even more) toxic if the person doesn’t “react appropriately” to the story or gush over how FFXIV is the greatest game ever and how it changed their lives. Let people play the game how they want and if you don’t like how they’re playing, find something else to do.

If they were watching and venting only to themselves then your comment might have merit. It’s not okay in the slightest for these viewers to be toxic towards someone else for how they play the game. They are being rudely entitled by behaving that way, plain and simple.

To be fair, though, the opposite reaction is just as bad. It's pretty common, especially around here, to see people saying that content creators are just faking it or playing to their audience if they show any sign of emotion at all. Maybe they really did get surprised by that story moment even if you didn't. Maybe they really do love that character you don't. Maybe they really did enjoy the story even if you didn't. Just because they don't share your perspective or didn't respond the same way you did (or haven't been playing as long as you have) doesn't mean they're wrong or that they were just faking it.

I feel as though part of this problem comes from people who for some reason feel the need to play up how they felt at certain moments. I see it all the time in various places. Like, "Oh at THIS part I WAS RUINED!! I SOBBEDDDDDD for HOURRS" Like, no you didnt. At most you teared up and maybe a single droplet slid down your cheek, but you werent on your knees pounding on your floor about it. You werent actually in hysterics. You just felt overwhelmed in a good way. I have no idea why people talk like that, but they do. and I know I know, exaggeration. But the problem with that is...if everyone's parroting these exaggerated phrases about how they reacted when they got to certain parts, then when they watch someone get to that same part and react in a completely normal way (like sitting silently and letting it sink in or just laughing), they act all weirded out and like that person must not have been paying attention correctly. They get penalized for not giving the 'proper' and expected response that everyone else claims to have. Get it? If everyone is standing in front of a table saying they see a sheep even though none of them do but they're all saying it to fit in, then the one person to walk in and say "There's nothing there" instead of playing along will look absurd and rude.

That and overall, people are just weird about reactions in general. I dont know, I guess on twitch you're supposed to be like..super outbursty or something. Like, OHHH MY GOD OHHHHHHH OH DID YOU ALL SEE THAT OHHHHHH BLABHLBHLABH-tiring. Most of us sit here with a blank expression. It shouldnt be horrific to see someone else do it. Stop facial expression policing, it's weird.
