Very Specific DirectX Crash

I'm sure this isn't the first DirectX Error thread that's been posted here, but this one's a bit of a curiosity.

I've had the crash on dungeons, which was always annoying, and I didn't think too much of it until I started seeing a pattern. the more I looked into this pattern, the clearer it became, until I realized that it was VERY consistent.

Any and every time the song "Insatiable (Primal Remix)" [better known as the "miniboss theme" from Shadowbringers dungeons] plays, I get the error and crash. It only happens on the first two bosses; this crash has never happened on the last boss (where a different theme plays), on Mt Gulg (where a different track plays for the bosses), or any dungeons outside of the Shadowbringers expansion.

Muting the music did nothing, and reinstalling the game (complete repair, complete uninstall/reinstall) did nothing to abate this problem; in fact it made the crash happen earlier into the track than before. The only workaround I have been able to do is slide the dialog box into a corner and ignore it, but when I do, I lose all sound, as well as all animations including some markers and boss effects.

my guess is a corrupt file, but no amount of repairing or reinstalling has seemed to have any effect on it, so at this point I'm a bit at a loss.

Hey, delete the game completely and then run a harddrive check. You can do it with:

1. open CMD with administrator rights
2. type chkdsk DRIVELETTER: /X /B /F /R

If the game should be installed on the d: drive, type: chkdsk d: /X /B /F /R

After this, install the game again.

it's on an external hard drive because even for a gaming laptop the HD doesnt have much space.

chkdsk didn't work, got this instead:
"the type of file system is exFAT.
Windows supports re-evaluating bad clusters on NTFS volumes only."

You use exFat ... mhhh, i guess this could be the cause for your problems. You should use NTFS instead for the game. But you cannot convert ExFAT to NTFS. You must reformat the harddisk with NTFS. And with formating the harddrive you will lose all data on it.
