/assist Guidance

So I was reading the Lodestone and the Macros. I cannot for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong. The Lodestone states:

/assist(/as) [player] | Targets the target of a PC specified by a ‹t› or ‹p#› macro.

I have setup my macro:

/assist "Player Name" and it fails. Is it not possible to identify the player by name? (I play with the same people regularly). Or am I limited to using <t> or p#? I haven't tried this, but can I use <st>?

One of the most frustrating things about joining the game again, is the online community is tight an there is a lot of outdated and misinformation. Any help?

you have to do /assist <t> or /assist <p#>

I usually go with the latter and just change the number for each party.

/assist <stparty> also works. If you do it that way, you can hit the macro and then select which party member to assist from the menu.
