Unnatural FPS drops

[AUTHRIGHTIUM]

Hey there, so I did a clean install of Windows on 17/10, pretty recently cause I had insane FPS drops, after reinstalling every single software and FF, I ran an alliance raid and frames were pretty good and stable, very close to 60 or 60. (I play on 1080p@60Hz, i5-6400+1060 3GB) but as I kept playing and playing, eventually I had issues in P3S which is 8 man instead. I tried setting battle effects to limited and I still get unplayable framerates like say +- 40. What could be causing this issue? Is there a way to troubleshoot it ?

I'd like to get some more information regarding your issue. Does this issue occur when the game is run in full screen , windowed mode or borderless windowed mode? Additionally have you tried updating your graphics drivers? Also, is the PC connected directly to the router or are you using WiFi? Does FPS drop occur in specific instances or does it happen regardless of what is being done in game?

I'm using driver version 511.79 (probably the latest Game Ready Driver, not sure)
I am using Ethernet
I have a feeling it happens most of the time but this needs extensive testing to find out, for example yday I queued for an Alliance Raid (with battle effects set to limited, shadows were maxed out at that run) and while I wasn't able to look at FPS all the time I think average was like 50 and it sometimes dropped lower than 50 like say 35 or 40, also it happens in P3S everytime especially in firestorms of asphodelos when you do elmo strat and 2 tornadoes fire at the tanks + the 2 tethers, and generally getting drops there too. I can't vouch 100% for the FPS numbers though, if there's a tool that records FPS throughout the whole instance and I could run that and test it on specific content please say so and I will test it, currently I have disabled all shadows and the 3 below settings to lowest possible, I can also show you my nvidia panel settings if that helps : https://imgur.com/a/BMw4bE4 + https://imgur.com/a/oWCSb3M + https://imgur.com/a/MWcjMPJ

Not to hijack this thread but to echo the same sentiments as OP, I've been having the exact same unnatural FPS drops that drastically lower my framerate and inputs, making playing the game for even a half hours time feel extremely bad! I have found that temporarily reducing the graphics settings to a lower-end preset can curb the wild FPS drops, as did OP, but even with this I still find myself lagging on occasions as I had in O6N earlier today.
Interestingly enough, my graphics card is an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB, so maybe the visuals of FFXIV don't favor our specific GPU? Pretty much in the same boat as OP, so I'll keep myself around this post and hope for a positive resolution!

EDIT: Since you have Nvidia, you should be able to use Geforce Experience as a recording software. Under its settings you'll find a tab that says ' In-Game Overlay '. Be sure that's enabled and enter -that- settings, select HUD Layout, Performance, and FPS will be an option to choose! You can likely figure out how to record videos and the like under Keyboard Shortcuts, or make shortcuts of your own from there. Best of luck!

I've found the solution to my problems! As it turns out, the fans on my graphics card weren't running. At all. When I pushed them back into place to the point that they'd run, FFXIV ran as it normally do

Yup yup gpu throttling will definitely cause frame rate issues. This is good thing as is the gpu saving its self from experiencing demise! For the op had look through your settings and thankfully did before just suggesting checking task manager.

Have noticed you enabled 8x supersampling, a fairly demanding setting as you are forcing game to run at eight times native resolution. This works best on 2000/3000 series Nvidia gpus because the ten series lacks the tensor cores leveraged for this task. Try setting this to 4x or 2x or disabling and see if frame rate improves. If does not be certain to check task manager during the frame issues for insight.
