We currently have a maximum of 40 characters per service account under a standard subscription with a limit of 8 characters per world.
I would like that limit to be increased from 8 characters to 10 or 12 characters per world.

You could make them on another world and use world visit.
In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.

That doesn't work for me. World visiting is full with restrictions.
I want to share my FC with alt characters so I need more slots. I need them to live in the same world.
I have the basic sub and all my alts are on other servers... I can't imagine what use I'd get out of more than 1 per server... 8 seems plenty, what do you even do with them?
Given that you can have every job maxed out on one character if you wish, is there any value to alts other than aesthetics? Genuinely asking since I’m pretty new to the game. Started in December and just finished Endwalker a couple weeks ago.
Roleplaying. Some people will want a separate character with a separate character history.
Raid loot. You can only have a chance at loot once per week from each raid floor, but if all 8 of you have 8 alts you could clear 8 times to guarantee loot on eachother's mains. I don't think many people bother though.
Free extra retainers to sell items on the market board or to sell items on other servers, but then you need a person or FC chest in the middle to transfer items and gil between characters.
To play on other data centers (but this won't be a problem once we have data center travel).
There isn't much reason and it's not very common to have more than one serious character.

It’s indeed niche, but there are benefits to having multiple characters. RP probably being the easiest/simple.
You could also potentially:
Own a house for each character (with huge work arounds)
Item mules (holding excess crafting items, materia, fireworks etc)
Have massive amount of retainers doing daily returns, market shenanigans or mannequin displays
Other weekly money-maker activities (like Doma)
Have the ability to play with specific groups at specific times, even a second chance with people you might have blown it with (to good or bad effect)
In my case, I tend to grind hard when I’m not playing other games, maxing out all my jobs to cap…at such a time if my friends/wife want to do roulette, we use my alt so the alt can get xp (I have zero interest in tomestone gear), and often first timer bonuses. I also don’t unlock dungeons/raids I don’t like so we are guaranteed to get places that are easier to run through.
