What is fun to you in an MMO?

    Hiya folks.

Just a curious friendly survey of sorts.

*lies in wait to ambush me*

What kind of things are fun to you in an MMO?
    • Clearing all missions/content?
    • Meeting new people and hanging out?
    • Thrill of competition for first place, time attack, achievements, etc.
    • For the admiration and/or awe that comes with first place, setting records, achievements or excellent gear?
    • Gathering the best gear and loot available?
    • Collecting rare items, costumes and other baubles?
    • Using cool attacks and spells in aesthetically awesome gear?
    • Living out your the story you create for your character?
    • Living out the story that the developers have in mind for your character?
    • Overcoming obstacles with minimal outside resources?
    • Learning more about the world you adventure in, exploring and lore?
    • Organizing events for others to participate in?
    • Creating a legacy to your name or guild?
    • Character progression outside of gear (leveling up, merit points/alternative advancement)
    • Finding new ways to play the game?
    • Other:
There's probably a poll somewhere that encompasses all of this.

What types of things do you enjoy in an MMO? What drives you to log into the game each play session? But most importantly, are you doing things in-game that you enjoy or do you find you're spending more time doing things you don't enjoy for a smaller amount that you do enjoy?

Social gatherings/discussions that a shell, server or forums may foster from time to time.

I like character progression with classes/jobs outside of gear, primarily for the jobs and classes that I enjoy or that look interesting to me. Sometimes links into living out the story I have in mind for a character.

I'm pretty story driven. I like continuous story plots with strong character development.

Overcoming obstacles with minimal outside resources (I've compromised).

I tend to want to learn more about the world only if I'm intrigued enough to write fanfiction, make a skit or roleplay. My little lore and dialect document is fed a little each game session.

The fact that I have the impression to "invest" my time for several years, rather than playing a game that will be done in a few days.

Being involved in story constantly. Solving puzzles based on lore/history of in-game areas. Epic questing WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

It's all about the community for me. I love being able to share an experience with folks in a fun atmosphere. I hate grinds.

I like "character development" that's why games like Demon's/Dark Souls, Armored Core, Skyrim and such are very appealing to me, I just like collecting gear and optimizing it for different situations, and of course the social aspect is a big draw for me and thats why I play MMOs.

    My issue with FFXIV

FFXIV is kind of robbing me of that feeling/satisfaction I get from MMOs since most of the "collectables" are weak and unimpressive, craftables in most cases are just blanks to put materia on, and when the semi-decent darklight gear came out I was encouraged to work for it, then discovered that its just a faux difficulty scheme by SE and finding people interested in doing events the "classic" way instead of just changing and stacking jobs through out the run got me some weird looks and many found my "refusal to adapt to the modern times" laughable.

Why am I still here? I guess I still can't let go of the "Next FFXI" dream and probably won't unless 2.0 turns out to be a massive disappointment.

    • Building an identity for myself, personally and socially.
    • Leveling lots of jobs, preferably underdog jobs
    • Speaking of jobs, I like games with a huge variety of them, I don't just want "Tank class, damage class, magic class, heal class." You can have 10 DPS classes but there is for sure a way to make them all play differently enough that they don't step on each other's toes.
    • Storylines that make you actually feel accomplished when you overcome the challenge and see the next part
    • Unique racial backstory that's expressed inside the game everywhere you go and not just on the website
    • Being versatile
    • Looking damn good in my gear
    • Actually having to form a group and go to the content instead of a content finder auto-grouping and teleporting you straight to wherever.
    • Playing with people and meeting new people, not just through endgame content but through leveling as well.
