I get it. And you're right. It's on them to figure out the logistics and not on the player base. Speculating is fun nonetheless.
Like I mentioned in an earlier thread I'd love to a version of this game with a higher graphic fidelity. Better facial rigs, smoother animations and more QoL features.
But even with the Yoshida's comment about having more content to run this game for another 10 years I have a feeling that we'll see another FF mmo announced before 10 years from now and that that will basically be the visual upgrade people would want.

As long as this game is doing well, there is no way on Earth that there will be another FF MMO. Cannabilizing your own product that is making money by betting on a new costly project to replace it while it's doing well is completely meaningless. There is no way we will see a WoW 2 either anytime soon for the same reason.

I'd actually consider playing a WoW 2, assuming they got rid of the entire cast of characters that have been around the last 15-20 years and did something about the cartoons. I haven't subscribed since BFA -- totally lost interest in that game.

I imagine, as Yoshida has said, that the next one would be substantially different in which case they might, on earth , actually be able to coexist just fine. Though I'm not convinced we'd get any announcement of another game anytime soon (as in this year or something). The game will be fine financially for some time, even if they stopped touching it all together lol (though obviously that would create problems).

Reapply, sure.

"Cannibalize" implies its taking X meant that the previous owner couldn't still have it. Such is the case for Overwatch 2, for instance, in which its creation will literally shut down OW1 for those who preferred Open Queue, 6v6, tighter role balance (since it couldn't just rely on --even tighter-- role locks), and more diverse hero design possibilities, etc., because OW2 will just be a universally applied patch to OW1.

There's no reason to think an FFXVII or the like wouldn't coexist to the degree that XI and XIV do, though.
