Rogue gets Mug. And a throwback ability from FFXI called Trick Attack. They also have a Hide ability. That's about all the thief stuff that would apply. Frankly, the way this game is designed, where every job is shoe-horned into one of three roles, we can't expect Rogue (or Ninja) to be anything other than a different flavor of DPS.

I'd love to see THF but it'll never happen. Like a few have said, FFXIV doesn't really have room for a treasure hunter who steals items, gets better loot drops, or can open treasure chests or locked doors without a key. The game doesn't have locked treasure chests and the only locked doors are in Sastasha. Unfortunate.

Something something limited job that goes back solo in dungeons to unveil unexplored treasure.

But yeah, on the topic, I don't ever see Thief happening because realistically, the combat fantasy for a thief is already completely insterted into ninja. The idea itself is practically there with another name in the Rogue class, also because traditionally in FF games, the thief is often seen as precursor for ninja.

Like you said, what there is else to explore - in combat - for a Thief job that is not covered already by Ninja?

Rogue is 14's Thief. Read the quest cutscenes, they literally tell you the Thief's Guild was rebranded to be the Rogue's Guild.

Rogue and Thief are often synonymous in RPGs, so yeah rogue is as close as you're going to get. I wish they had done more with the splitting classes idea, and had ninja and thief both come from rogue.

True but I have yet to see any evidence that it actually works.

I mean, if nothing else I'd like a proper THF with a blanket drop chance+ for normal mobs instead of hiding it as a proc behind Mug. I still can't fathom why SE chose to make the drop rates so horrible for monster mats, when you need just as many of them for stuff as any gathered tidbit.

I use it and don't see anything definitive. I've never seen something say "you have mugged ____" so you'd need sample sizes in the thousands to show any meaningful trend.

There's no special message for it, or any indication that it actually worked. You'd never really know it wasn't just a normal item drop.

At this point for new materials, it's faster to do fates and buy what you need with bicolor gems than it is to farm the monsters.
