First, I want to say that I'm extremely thankful for the community for finding workarounds. It's one of the reasons I love open source so much, since they're often far more responsive than big corporations whose only goal is to make money by any means necessary, and open source is often far less resource-intensive, resulting in better performance and longer battery life than its corporate counterparts.

That said, the issue itself remains unsolved since even with the current workarounds, we still need a working Windows installation for the initial link in order to be able to play. As a result, I can't in good conscience let this thread die.

This isn't a matter of an "unsupported platform" because literally every game engine nowadays runs in Linux/Proton just fine. Even Unreal Engine, for all Epic's anti-Linux crap, runs fine. With how far development has come, it's easy for any game developer to support Proton. The tide has shifted. It's on *game developers* to ensure compatibility, not blaming Linux users for using an unsupported platform.

And so, this particular issue is to be considered a game-breaking bug for existing players. At least, it should be if Square cared at all about bugs in their game, but given the state of their launcher that, as others have stated, relies on security vulnerabilities in order to function, I don't think Square cares about bugs so much as they care about what costs them money. Which is extremely sad because the game's own story goes so hard to portray how we should be encouraging the exact opposite of that greedy mindset.

And anyone that thinks me a Linux fangirl for stating such has clearly been living under a technological rock for the past 5 years, so let me be the first to welcome you out of your hole. If you've also been under a social rock for the past 5 years, you might want to find a mask asap because the Western world has been busy fucking up their handling of COVID in every way they possibly can.

    Fixed it for you:

"I'm particularly upset because I cannot start this game up on my Xbox. Sure, it's an unsupported platform, but it is one of the many systems out there where game engines run just fine, when coded for the Xbox. It's easy for a game developer to support the Xbox. The tide has shifted. It's on "game developers" to ensure compatability, regardless of whether they actually advertise they support the Xbox platform or not."

Demanding that a game company support your particular device, when such device is not listed as being supported, is the height of arrogance, and needs to be discouraged.

The ultimate "work around" for this problem is simple. Install Windows 10 on your Steam device. It's a valid option. Then you'll have full support for your game.

Proton isn't a platform...its literally an emulator, so yes it is a matter of being unsupported because the game is not supported for linux.

Also, what tide? Linux is barely 2% of the market and barely 1% of steam users use linux.
