    FFXIV 1.0 had the Path Companion (an NPC fighter that assisted the player in certain story battles) which is more or less what you're after. However, Yoshi replaced that concept with the Chocobo Companion after he took over development of the game following 1.0's failure and there has been no word as whether they will ever come back (the only references to the Path Companions are quotes from dialogue made by the male lalafell and male highlander hyur Path Companions in ARR's Minion Guide).

    Sadly, I'm pretty certain Yoshi considers the Chocobo Companion enough for open-world content, and the Grand Company Squadron and the Trust system for dungeons and party duties, as much as I miss my highly intelligent yet highly sexed Moonkeeper miqo'te Path Companion, and would love to have her return.
