Need help figuring problem with fps/gpu

So I usually play ffxiv on no limit on my fps and I usually get normally 120fps and so my game runs pretty smoothly. But yesterday my wifi was starting to act up so I logged off. When I came back a few hours later my wifi was better but not the best like before but I was able to play atleast but now my fps and GPU are dropping and going up every 5 to 10 seconds. I tried playing with the graphics and putting it at the lowest but it doesn't help. My game is now stuttering like crazy. Is it time to get a new laptop or is there a way to fix this. Please help and thanks

Hmm, there's a number of possible reasons for this.

What is the make/model of laptop, how old is it, specifications - graphics chip, cpu, memory, OS, etc.

I would begin by checking the following:

Has there been any updates to the OS/drivers recently?
    Any new applications installed?
    Check for Background processes.
Check temperatures of Graphics Card and CPU. (Clear out any air vents, etc)
    Run a game file repair.
Run diagnostics on memory and disks.

Remember that fps tends to drop or becomes more unstable in areas with a lot of players. It certainly has nothing to do with WiFi. Could it be that your 120 fps was when you were in a less crowded place but later on you moved and the fps began to drop?

No even when I'm in popular areas I wàs at 100 or 80 fps. But now even when I'm in lavenders bed in front of my house where no one is at I do one action like a heal to myself or a defense buff my fps drop to 20 for 5 seconds

Maybe you can try what Casti said. I would check the drive where XIV is stored if i were you. I had similar stuttering because my HD was almost dead, once I moved it to another the game stoppes stuttering. You can also try updating your graphics card driver.

It sounds to me, that the CPU overheats and then it throttles the clockrates down to prevent damage. If your CPU fan is clean and the problem still persists, then you should renew the thermal paste.

    Cheers
