You can enter a friendship code before you purchase your first subscription with the game to get some free extra stuff. You cannot do so if you already have a paid subscription.
The free trial doesn’t count as a paid subscription, and neither does the free 30 days you get for buying the Starter or Complete editions.

How to redeem the code:
1.) Login to your FFXIV account at Mog Station at http://sqex.to/Msp
2.) Under Registration Codes on the left side, select Enter Recruitment Code
3.) Enter the code: DC4ZQSV5
4.) Follow the onscreen instructions to register your recruitment code from there

What do you get from this?

Well:
—The Friendship Circlet, which gives a 20% XP boost up to level 25 —99 Aetheryte Tickets, each good for a free teleport
—A book labeled Ballroom Etiquette
- Improper Greetings. Use this to gain a fist bump emote
